Nā Holo Wahine is a benefit for the University of Hawai‘i – Maui College scholarship fund in memory of Kelly Watanabe, who passed away in 2021 after a long battle with cancer. This scholarship is a tribute to Kelly’s life as a runner, wellness advocate, educator, and community volunteer.
Kelly was a lifelong runner and avid marathoner who ran marathons in all 50 states, Japan, and Canada. She was also a long-time Valley Isle Road Runner member and dedicated volunteer—serving on the board, working behind the scenes on the club’s fun runs, and co-directing the Nā Holo Wahine Fun Run/Walk. This is the fourth year that Nā Holo Wāhine is being co-hosted at UH-Maui College—thanks to Kelly and her strong connections with the college. Kelly graduated from the neighbor island Master of Accounting and MBA programs then went on to become a faculty member—first as a lecturer in business and math, then a business careers instructor in 2016, and finally as the accounting program coordinator in 2018. Kelly’s involvement at the college extended beyond the business programs. She was also an active member of the college’s Wellness Hui, a Zumba instructor for the college’s Maui Fit program, co-founder of the weekly walking Moai, and faculty advisor to UH-MC’s Dance Klub headed by her son.
Nā Holo Wahine is a Mothers’ Day celebration open to all and a fitting way to honor and remember Kelly and her burst of energy, determination, enthusiastic smile, and champion attitude towards life!
