Winter Strength Training Program

Our coaching team has been idea-sharing with our colleagues at HYROX -- a global fitness racing series based in Chicago (and the team who produced the 2015 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final here in the city).

If you’re not familiar, HYROX combines running (8k in total) + functional strength (8 exercises) into one session. The events are held inside convention centers and last 90 minutes on average. They’re high-energy, full of encouragement and simply awesome.

Much like the swim clinics are to the Chicago Triathlon, HYROX wants to create development programs for non-traditional audiences. They cater to gym-goers and CrossFit audiences, not endurance athletes – but they should, because we need strength training like crazy.

Long story short: Not only are we piloting a simple training program for their upcoming event at Navy Pier, but many of our coaches will participate as well – and we want you to join us! This program is complimentary, but participants must register for the HYROX event. Training begins the week of December 5, but you can join at any time (as long as space remains).

Thank You, Athletes!

Thank you to all 1,800+ swimmers who participated in the 2022 Open Water Swim season. We hope the program was beneficial, and helped you successfully reach your finish line.  Dates for the 2023 OWS program are listed above, with registration scheduled to open in March 2023. Stay tuned for more details and enjoy the offseason!

This program was launched in 2012 to help new triathletes experience open water swimming in a safe, non-intimidating environment. These events provide participants with expert coaching, gear check, wetsuit rental opportunities, life guard support and post-event socials with fellow participants and coaches. Since inception, more than 14,800 participants have directly enhanced their swim abilities from these clinics.

While we're best known for developing aspiring adults, OWS Chicago also serves experienced triathletes looking to refresh their skills and/or push themselves with fellow enthusiasts. Veterans often enroll in the Swim-On-Your-Own or Competitive Aquathlon options. Click here for a Course Map. Full details can be found here.

Registration is a nominal $20 fee. Event capacity is limited to 150 participants per session, many of which will sell-out. Participants must be 18 years or older. Due to capacity restrictions, there are no-refunds or transfers allowed. Participants must be able to tread water on their own, comfortably place their face under the surface, and maintain some level of forward propulsion to enroll.

Event Options

This event series features three ways to participate:

  1. Open Water Swim Clinic: Private swim instruction for beginner, intermediate or advanced-level swimmers who are looking for open water tips and techniques. Swimmers are placed into groups of 12-15 individuals with similar experience levels and goals. Coaches will facilitate a 45-minute, in-water session. Participants choose from three start times.
  2. Swim-On-Your-Own: This option is for those participants who prefer to utilize the event services (gear check, wetsuit rental, etc) but swim independently. Swim-On-Your-Own participants have the option to start in a timed swim, or just do their own thing. Due to limited space, these registrants will check-in and start at specific times.
  3. Competitive Aquathlon (Swim + Run): Participants looking to test their endurance against others will start alongside fellow athletes. Swimmers will complete a 750m or 1500m swim (their choice) followed by a 3.1 mile (5k) run along the lakefront. Staff will manually record splits, posting results following the event. Overall performing female and male finishers in the 1500m swim distance will earn prizes!
Start Times & Series Dates

Participants may register for each of the four dates independently or all at once. During the registration process, Swim Clinic and Swim-On-Your-Own participants must select from one of three start times:

  • 4:00 PM
  • 5:15 PM
  • 6:30 PM

Participants will convene on the beach for a quick briefing before starting their sessions. Aquathlon participants begin together at 6:00 PM.
