Events

8hr Adventure Race

8:00AM CST - 4:00PM CST

Race Cancelled

After several attempts to reschedule and relocate, we were unable to come to an agreement that would allow us to have the event in the intended format and scope.  So we have made the difficult decision to cancel this event.  All existing entries should have received an email noting that refunds have been processed.  We hope to bring Adventure Racing into the norm in Southern Illinois.  We have learned a lot and will continue to pursue an event that will open up what this beautiful region has to offer.  Sincerely - So iLL Racing

Good Morning Racers,

First of all, I just want to think you for signing up and supporting our first Adventure Race.  As a race timing and management company, we have helped to put on 100s of events.  I personally have been doing adventure races for over 15 years and have always wanted to bring my own in Southern Illinois.

On to the logistics of how to get there and what to expect.  I have made a few changes from what was on the original schedule you may have seen on the registration page.

Race HQ will be at Freeburg Hall at Touch of Nature

37.624849, -89.149756

Check-In from 6:30-7:30am inside Freeburg Hall

Maps and cluesheets will be available at 7:00am

Pre-Race meeting on the patio (North side of Freeburg Hall) at 7:30am

Race Start 8:00am

Bike Drop will be about 200 ft from the parking lot to Freeburg Hall

If you have a 3rd seat for the canoes, please bring it to check-in so we can shuttle it to the paddle put-in.  We will also shuttle it back to the finish from the take-out.

The course begins to close at 4:00pm.  Every minute after 4:00 will result in the loss of 1 CP.  Finish at 4:11 and you will lose 11 CPs for example.

Food will begin to be served inside Freeburg Hall at 3:00pm.

Awards will tentatively begin at 4:30pm

The course for 2023 is a pretty dense course with 35 CPs over 4 legs of racing.  The course should be easily clearable by the more experienced teams while still providing some true adventure for all teams.

There will be no punches at the Start or the Finish, but there will be a punch at all Transition Areas (TAs).

Weather

The current forecast is Partly Cloudy, 33F to 52F.

We are expecting some winter weather this week.  We will keep an eye on the weather and how it may impact the course.  You will be notified of any updates/changes.

Food and Water

Please bring all of your own water and food for the duration of the event.  Food will be available at the end of the event.  Water will be available inside Freeburg Hall.

Gear

The Gear List is posted and up to date. Please review to make sure you have all the mandatory gear for the race.

We have received several questions regarding cell phone usage for photography during the race. While in many longer races, any use of a GPS-capable device is prohibited we will allow racers to use their phone for photos. We understand cell phones have become multifunctional and most people's go-to camera. We want you to be able to document your event and share your experience with others. We just ask that you respect the spirit of the sport and not use any GPS device during the race. Also, anyone seen using a GPS device (by the event staff or other racers) may be disqualified from the race.

Bike computers tracking distance and speed only are allowed.

Maps

The map packet will include all of your maps, course instructions, rules, and passports. Race maps are 1:24000 scale topographical maps and will be pre-plotted with all of the checkpoint locations. However, we did include UTM coordinates with each clue and a plot tool is still required. We encourage you to bring a map case or large Ziploc bag to protect your map and clue sheet during the race. Clue sheets are not waterproof.

Outside maps, other than the race map and any supplemental maps provided in your map packet, are prohibited.

If you have any other questions before race day, please reach out by replying to this email.

See you on Saturday!

Jason Claunch
