Description
The 5k walk/run is in loving memory of Carter Lee Kerns, son of Alyssa and Ed Kerns. Carter died in a tragic accident the day before his first birthday. Determined to bring good from tragedy, his parents founded the Carter Lee Kerns Memorial Fund, a permanent endowment fund established at the Martin County Community Foundation. Annual payouts from this fund will go to support non-profit organizations that work to enhance the lives of children and families in Martin County, IN. All race proceeds will go to the Carter Lee Kerns Memorial Fund held and administered by the Community Foundation Partnership Inc. on behalf of the Martin County Community Foundation.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk/run begins at 10:00 a.m. Awards will be given for the top three males and females in each category: <18, 18-33, 34-49, 50-65, >65. Plaques will be awarded for the top male and female overall.
Race Day:
- 8:30 am - Registration Opens (shirt pick up and onsite registration)
- 10:00 am - 5K Begins
- 11:00 am - 5K award ceremony begins
- This event will occur rain or shine. Plan to come out and enjoy, no matter what the weather!
Thanks to the generosity of West Boggs Park, the gate fee will be waived for everyone attending the 5k. So, come on out and enjoy!

Race Course
We are having the 5k run/walk at West Boggs park again this year. We will follow the same route as we have in the past. If you have never participated before, here are some features of the 5k.
- It takes place inside of West Boggs park. The entire 5k is paved. Although occasionally there will be a car driving through the park, the route is generally traffic free.
- There are some steep hills and speed bumps throughout the course. This has proven an exciting challenge for runners, but has not stopped the average walker from completing the race.
- The race route is marked with signage and guides along the route. The Shriners will lead the way and a golf cart will follow at the end.
- The 5k route goes through the park providing many beautiful views. Because the route is near the lake, it does get windy. Please keep this in mind, especially if the air temperature is cool and/or it is rainy. This event occurs rain or shine. Race fees are non-refundable.
- We have a great time. This is a family event and we have lots of kids and adults participating. Please be mindful that some runners are trying to obtain personal best results. If you are walking or jogging, please allow those running to start closest to the starting line.
- Although we LOVE our pets dearly, we ask that you keep your four legged friends at home. With so many young children and lots of excitement, it can be overwhelming even to the calmest pet.
- We do keep track of the order you cross the finish line and award medals for overall winners and age division winners. We do not use a chip system or track individual time. If you want to know your individual time, please bring your own timing device.
