The iconic red brick building that was once New Haven High School which, more recently, has served as the middle school, is about to become extinct. But before it goes, there will be a farewell celebration.
Saturday, June 1, just two days before the middle school razing begins, a New Haven High School “classes reunion” of sorts will be held at Schnelker Park to say goodbye to the school that had been NHHS for thousands of graduates between the years 1923 and 1977.
Festivities begin at 3 p.m. when New Haven High School alumni, friends, former teachers, administrators and even the curious are invited for a final walk-through of the building, which concludes at 7 p.m.
At 5 p.m., the goodbye party continues at Schnelker Park near the former New Haven High, where what has been dubbed the “Bulldog Bash” will be held until 9 p.m. The $20 per person cost, whether purchased pres ale or at the door, will include limited food catered by Rack & Helen’s, a concert by the New Haven High School alumni band, a rock ‘n roll band (to be announced later), and a souvenir brick from the school. A cash bar of beer, wine and soda will be available. Additionally, name tags will be provided to help sort out members of each graduating class. Because tables and chairs will be limited, those attending are urged to bring their own lawn chairs.
Proceeds from the event and any additional donations will go toward the purchase of motorized American flag for the newly-renovated high school gymnasium. The 12-foot wide, 18-foot long flag electronically lowers from a housing mounted in the gym. School and community officials estimate the cost at $6,000.
