C4C

Dear C4C registrants,

Due to community health and safety concerns posed by the outbreak of COVID-19, we regret to inform you that this year's Color for a Cause will be cancelled. As hard as this decision was for us to make, we will follow the decisions recently made by Valparaiso University in order to protect our community. We thank you for your understanding and for your interest in participating in this year's C4C. We hope that you can join us for next year's event.

You will have the option to receive a full refund of your registration fee. Please follow the link below to receive your refund. Alternatively, you can choose to donate your registration fee to this year's World Relief Campaign (WRC), Funding Fresh Starts: Empowering Immigrants through Education. Despite recent closures on Valparaiso University's campus, SALT is still putting on this year's WRC and working towards our goal to support the Interfaith Community for Detained Immigrants! We are finding new ways to run our campaign in these strange circumstances. You can learn more about the campaign here

The health and safety of our community is our first priority, and we hope you all stay safe and well during this time. Once again, thank you for your interest in supporting this year's campaign.

Peace,

Katherine (C4C Race Director)

Description

C4C (Color 4 a cause) is a 5K event that supports the annual World Relief Campaign and is hosted by the Social Action Leadership Team (SALT) from Valparaiso University.  This year's world relief campaign is Funding Fresh Starts: Empowering Immigrants Through Education. Our partner organization is the Interfaith Community for Detained Immigrants (ICDI). This project will establish a loan fund to support immigrants with asylum status to gain the certifications that they need to jump start their professional careers. To learn more about last year's fundraising campaign and more about what the World Relief Campaign is click here.

The 5K features various color stations throughout the route where volunteers shower runners with colored powder. Each runner will be provided a white T-Shirt with the race logo and sunglasses for eye protection. If someone wishes to participate in the run, but not get any color on them, each color station will have a "no color" lane where no color will be showered upon them.

**Sign ups after 4/18/2020 are not guaranteed a shirt in their size. Register as soon as possible to guarantee your shirt size.

**Any registration after May 1 at 4 pm will have to be completed at the race, starting at 8:00 am at the Chapel of the Resurrection on Valparaiso University's campus. Cash, check, Venmo, and PayPal will be accepted.

FAQ

Race Route:

Are there awards?

Yes. There will be awards for the top 20 finishers of the race.

Is C4C only for runners, joggers, people who run, etc.?

Of course not! C4C is all about having a great time for a great cause and enjoying being active with family or friends. You can run, walk, crawl, roller-blade, hop, or skip to the finish line! Only those who run/walk are eligible to compete for awards.

What about kids?

For the first time ever, C4C2020 will offer a pre-race kids fun run. This will be a 100-200 meter dash along the finishing straight away, and will kick off at 9:00 just before the official race begins. All kids 8 and under are welcome to join at no extra charge, and there will be special awards for this event.

The cost of kid registration is also discounted. Registration for participants 5-8 years old is 15$ and they will receive a T-shirt (although this may be an adult XS, so it may be a little bit large on them. Children 4 and under can participate for free.

How does registering as a team work compared with individual registration?

You register as a team rather than as an individual.  You get to pick a groovy custom team name, anything from “The Roy G Biv All-stars” to “We Sweat Rainbows.”  You then get to run/walk together and help each other get really colorful through the 5km course. There is no “relay” component and team members can finish together as a unit or separately. (Please note that there are no discounts for team registration.)

What do I get in my registration packet?

Runners will receive a C4C shirt,  C4C sunglasses, and some other sweet swag.

Where do all of the profits from C4C go?

C4C is an annual event, produced by the Social Action Leadership Team (SALT) at Valparaiso University. Each spring, SALT conducts a World Relief Campaign (WRC) to raise funds for an organization in need. This year, all of the resources from C4C2020 are going to Interfaith Community for Detained Immigrants (ICDI). You can read more about this year's WRC by clicking here.

Can I run with a stroller or some other mode of baby transport?

Without a doubt! You will be one of the coolest moms or dads on the planet!

Can I run with my Dog?

Unfortunately, we ask that you leave your four-legged friends at home (i.e., no dogs allowed).

Is there a packet pick-up for the event? How does all that work?

Yes! Packet pick-up will happen the morning of the event beginning at 8:00am. Come to the lobby in the chapel where SALT volunteers will be set up at a table with your check in and your packets.

Do I really have to wear white? Or do I really have to wear my C4C shirt?

You can wear whatever you would like. However, you will definitely want to wear white! Wearing as much white as possible will best allow you to be transformed from a blank human canvas into a colorful masterpiece. Part of the fun is to cross the start line in white and to cross the finish line super colorful!

How is the color administered along the course? How many color stations are there? What is the color?

You will see smiling faces along the course whose main goal is to douse you in colorful powder. They will ensure that you look like you ran through a rainbow by the time you cross the finish line. C4C features six color stations throughout the course, each with a different color of powder. The color powder is food grade cornstarch and is 100% natural.  As with any substance, you want to keep it out of your eyes and our color throwers will aim low as you pass by. We recommend wearing your official #C4C2020 sunglasses to protect your eyes from  the colored powder, as well. Some participants decide to use a bandanna or dust mask for their mouths. There will also be a "no color" lane for participants who do not wish to have color thrown at them.

Will the color ruin clothes or running shoes?

The color does mostly wash out after the event.  As with anything dirty, the sooner you wash it the better. We suggest wearing items that you wouldn’t mind getting colorful. Wearing your C4C shirt can be the perfect option!  If you would like to preserve the color in your running shirt, we recommend spraying it with vinegar and iron it. If you wash your shirt (and wash it again), the color will eventually come out.

Will you have “cleaning stations” at the finish area?

Not exactly, but with a good dusting off, you aren’t 100% clean, but you are good for the drive home.  It is actually pretty fun to see people still colorful around town after The Color Run event. It is like a great way to raise awareness for the cause that you are supporting! It is a good idea to bring some towels for the insides of your car, or maybe a change of clothes, if you are really worried. (But you shouldn’t be. It’s all good )

Are cameras and phones safe to have in the color zones?

We recommend keeping your phones and cameras away from the color, especially if you don’t have a case of some sort. I mean, the color gets everywhere. If you want to get shots right in the midst of the color, we recommend covering your device with plastic wrap or putting it in a plastic baggie.

Is this race timed?

There will be a clock at the start-finish line where runners can collect their times. The times of the first 20 finishers will also be recorded by C4C volunteers. We will also attempt to collect times for finishers after the first 20, however an official time cannot be guaranteed.

Are there any post race activities?

We are planning to have a post race party this year! This will involve music, games, and prizes, and will be hosted in the Union Ballrooms. All race participants and their families are welcome!

What happens if there is bad weather?

We will continue C4C even in the case of a little rain or bad weather. In fact, it might even make the event a little more fun and interesting! If there are major weather warnings this weekend, check the Color 4 a Cause Facebook page and keep an eye out on your emails - we’ll keep you in the loop.

Can I switch my registration to someone else? Or what if there is a question that I have that wasn’t answered here?

For sure! Just email us at salt5k@valpo.edu and we will make it happen! And if you have any additional questions, feel free to shoot us an email!
