Equal Access Birmingham Heart and Sole 5K

About EAB:

On November 5, 2022, Equal Access Birmingham (EAB), a free medical clinic run by medical students from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine, is hosting the 8th annual Heart + Sole 5K Run virtually in order to raise money to further our mission -- to provide free medical care, medication, and health education to medically uninsured or underinsured residents of Birmingham. We staff two clinics each week, occurring Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. We also hold a monthly Mental Health Clinic. EAB strives to promote health and wellness in the Birmingham community.

We anticipate at least 300 runners and their families to participate. All proceeds will be used to support the operations of Equal Access Birmingham through the EAB Gift and Endowment Fund. Feel free to gather with family and friends, and choose one of the provided 5K routes below to take part or create your own! 

UABHSOM students may sign up with their Learning Community and compete against other Learning Communities for most participation. 

Here's how it'll work:

1. Register ahead of time online from this website. Online registration will remain open through November 5th. Students may collect their race t-shirts in Volker Hall at noon on November 4. T-shirts for non-students will be shipped to the home address specified on the registration form and will arrive after November 5.
2. Run or walk a 5k (3.1 miles) route or distance of your choice whenever and wherever you feel safe; fun 5K routes are listed below! We recommend running the 5k sometime during the week of October 29-November 5! Ask your family and friends to join you, and create your own mini-event. You may even run/walk on a treadmill! Alternatively, you may run join in an UNOFFICIAL group run of this route on November 5th, which begins and ends at the location of the post-race gathering -- Ghost Train Brewing! For those that choose to do so, runners will gathering at 4pm at the new Ghost Train Brewing location and begin the 5k at approximately 4:30pm. Please be advised, this route does involve running in the street in certain parts, and there will not be barricades for the runners. You run at your own risk. 
3. Take plenty of photos while running the race or after completing your run - especially with your race t-shirt or other UAB gear! Be sure to upload to social media with the hashtag #EABHeartSole5k.
4. Attend the post-race gathering at Ghost Train Brewing, 4-9pm! There will be food and drinks - come hungry and thirsty. 10% of all beer sales for the evening will also benefit Equal Access Birmingham! The address of Ghost Train Brewing's new location is 3501 First Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35222. 
5. Congratulate yourself on supporting Equal Access Birmingham and being active in the community for a good cause!

EARLY BIRD DEADLINE EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 10th!

For STUDENTS: To ensure you receive your t-shirt by race day, order by 11:59 p.m. on OCTOBER 10th! Early bird pricing includes a $5 discount. T-shirts will be available for pick-up at Volker Hall at Noon on November 4th.

For NON-STUDENTS: We will be shipping your t-shirts to your home address! Shirts shipped to home addresses will arrive after November 5.
