Red Valley/Buffalo Pass - Northern Chuska Mountains
Race window: September 25 – September 26, 2020
Yaateeh riders! Welcome to the 26th annual Chuska Challenge!
REGISTRATION – Online registration for the Chuska is now open through SATURDAY, September 26. The race this year has two options. Because of the recent Stay at Home Order, you may now only race the established course on Friday, September 25th. If you can't make that time or if you are out of the area, you may still race virtually on your own at any time during the two-day window, September 25-26. If you ride a virtual course of your own, the course must be 20 miles (of which 18 or more must be dirt) and 1000 feet of elevation gain. We ask that you practice social distancing during your time in the mountains. Please park distant from other vehicles (there is lots of space, so spread out) and do not ride in large groups. Wear a mask when around other people.
THE COURSE – If you opt to ride the race course we will have marked in the mountains, it will be 20 miles, primarily dirt road and doubletrack. The course will be marked with “Chuska” signage and pinflags.
The Start/Finish is the same as riders have experienced since 2016. However, the course is not the same as recent years’ race course. The 2020 race course goes past Buffalo Pass and onto the dirt roads north of the Pass in the area of Big Lake, the Dine’ Bikeyah Oil Field and Cove Overlook. It is a stunning course that will likely ride faster than last year’s course, with less climbing/descending than previous races.
There will be no support, aid stations or medical assistance on the course. Riders will be responsible for timing themselves on the course and submitting their info and time to our timer Josh at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you cannot come to the Nation to ride the course, you may ride a similar dirt road route in your area and submit that time to Josh. Please contact Josh at email@example.com or Tom at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in that option.
AWARDS – All riders will receive a finisher’s medal as well as a Chuska decal, race bib and performance t-shirt. The medal, t-shirt and bib will be mailed to riders.
There will be overall awards, as well as age-group award. All awards will be mailed after the race.
The race is also the fourth event in the Tour de Rez Cup bike race series. (Depending upon the Navajo Nation guidelines, Chuska may be the fourth event in the TDR Cup Series, following Hashkeniinii, MV and Asaayi. The re-scheduled Beclabito Bike Race is slated to be ran in October on a set course and will serve as the final event of the TDR Cup Series. The announcement regarding the Beclabito race details will be made as soon as possible.
The Chuska Challenge is brought to you by the Navajo Nation-based nonprofit organization Y.E.S. for Dine’ Bikeyah (NavajoYES). We encourage you to support the Navajo Nation (and nearby) bike shops and programs supporting the bike revolution on the Navajo Nation and Hopi Reservation! These include:
