Description
Welcome to the Virtual Pacific Crest Trail Expedition! The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is a 2,650-mile-long hike from the border of Mexico to the border of Canada, crossing through the states of California, Oregon, and Washington. This 10-week challenge was designed to build community, foster friendly competition, and motivate others to stay active and enjoy the outdoors in any capacity! Last year, 428 Pepperdine students, staff, and faculty (46 teams) virtually hiked from Mexico to the Oregon Border (1,690 miles) with 20 teams completing the entire Pacific Crest Trail (2,650 miles)!
This year, teams will be making the full virtual trek from Mexico up to Canada! Whether you have a team or not, all Pepperdine students, staff, and faculty are welcome to participate for free in this event. Registration will be open from January 6th to January 27th, 2025.
Note: To receive the password required upon registration, email kiana.ramli@pepperdine.edu

How Do I Virtually Hike?
While you are not ACTUALLY hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, you ARE "progressing along the trail" with your team by logging miles you've done by hiking, walking, running, swimming, working out, or cycling... anywhere!
Take on as few as 22 miles per week (3 miles per day with a full team of 12 members) to stay on track to complete the 2,650-mile challenge by April 14, 2025!
Check out our FAQs section under "Challenge Info" for guidance on how to log your activities!
Activities That Count Towards the Challenge
New this year - we are limiting the types of activities that count for mileage towards the Virtual PCT to the following:
Run/Walk/Hike: 1 mile = 1 mile for the VPCT
Swim: 1 mile = 1 mile for the VPCT
Workout/Fitness Class: 1 hour = 3 miles for the VPCT
Cycling: 1 mile = 0.25 miles for the VPCT
When you go to log activities, select the activity type and enter in your time, elevation gain (if applicable), and mileage after converting it according to the conversion chart above.
Live Map Tracking!
You will be able to see your progress along the route as you enter your mileage! Our live map tracking feature will even allow you to see where your rivals are on the map compared to you - now that's some motivation! (see example below)
To view your team's progress on the live map...
- Click on "TEAMS" in the main menu
- Click on "Team Results" next to your team's name
- Scroll all the way down and click on "View Progress on Map"
Milestones
Every so often on the trail, we have selected a milestone that each team can reach by a certain date. If your team reaches that milestone by its deadline, your team will receive a custom digital badge (see below!) and be entered into a raffle for the chance to win a prize for that checkpoint (see "FAQs" under "Challenge Info" in the main menu). The more milestones you make it to, the better the prizes become. See below for each milestone's deadline!
- 2/14 - Sand to Snow National Monument (226 miles)
- 2/28 - L.A Aqueduct (519 miles)
- 3/14 - Forester Pass(780 miles)
