2020 MT. BALDY CHALLENGE
~ October 2020 ~

ONE event, THREE Challenges, Choose YOUR Challenge!

The Mt. Baldy Challenge is a month-long virtual event with a challenge for everyone! Whether you’re racing to the summit of Mt. Baldy and back, lacing up for 4,193 feet of elevation gain, or readying yourself for a 14-mile run/walk, the Mt. Baldy Challenge offers a fun-filled event to inspire every participant, and challenge every ability.

About Mt. Baldy

It's not just the tallest peak in the San Gabriel's, Mt. Baldy is the highest peak in all of Los Angeles County, making it the rite of passage mountain for local runners and hikers. But scaling that peak isn't easy. Mt. Baldy (or Mt. San Antonio, as it is officially named), rises to 10,064ft above sea level with a distinctive and steep "bald" southeastern face. The summit can only be reached by one of two primary trails (the combined Baldy-Ski Hut Trail from the south, or the Devil's Backbone Trail from the east), and these two trails can be combined into one large loop trail. Both trails begin with the same trailhead on Falls Road and continue past the 80ft high San Antonio Falls, a mere .6 mile up the trail.

How to compete:

  • Register as an individual or team.
  • Run, Walk, or Hike your challenge any day(s) between October 1 and October 31, 2020.

The Mt. Baldy Challenge is an opportunity for runners, walkers, hikers, and athletes around the world to test the limits of their endurance. This is a virtual challenge - regardless of whether it is measured in miles or vertical gain - that will challenge you to push yourself toward greater heights. We challenge you to step up and unlock unknown potential with one more step, one more mile, or even one more mountain this year.

FAQ

Do I have to complete the challenge in one day? Not at all! We designed this challenge to fit your schedule so you can hit the trail or the treadmill or the apartment staircase whenever it's best for you. You can choose each day you get vert but just be sure to track your progress each time you head up the hill.

How do I track my elevation gain? A variety of apps can be downloaded on your smartphone like Strava or MapMyHike. You can also use your GPS watch or take a photo of your treadmill screen to show us your stats.

My treadmill only shows % grade. Can I still use this for results? Absolutely. Still take a photo, and then calculate your vertical gain based on the % grade and miles for submission.

How can I track my stair climbs? You'll need to measure the height of the flight of stairs and tally your laps to calculate the vertical gain. This workout can be entered as a manual entry on Strava for submission.

When do I get my stuff? You'll be able to print your bib immediately after registration, and your finisher's certificate with personal results will be available for download or print once you complete the challenge. Shirts, pint glasses, and buffs will be mailed out once registration closes in October.

When do I submit results? You can submit results after every activity that you make progress (and compare to see how you are doing against the rest of the field), or you can wait and submit ALL results at the end of your challenge. It's totally up to you!
