Cindy's Story
In Cindy's own words, "While taking a shower, I discovered a suspicious lump in my breast. It didn’t feel quite right and so I emailed my doc asking what to do? She couldn’t get me in for an appointment, so she scheduled one with another OB/GYN. I saw that doc about a week later and she said “good news, I feel it but it doesn’t feel like anything, eh serious. Let’s take some images to be sure.” Thank God we did. Another week later I went to a mammogram (where they seriously squish your y’all!) and had imaging done. They viewed the images and said we needed to do ultrasound images as well. While the ultrasound tech was taking my images, a sort of eerie feeling overcame me. And I think I kinda knew just then that it was cancer.
The tech brought in the radiologist to take her own images, and she told me, compassionately but seriously, that the images looked highly suspicious and that we needed to biopsy ASAP. I specifically asked her “are we doing this as a precaution, or is there something wrong?” And again, she said she was highly suspicious, and it was important to do right away. So, I came back the next day...and she performed the biopsy of a rather large tumor (about two inches) and a lymph node. When she asked me if I had any questions, I said: “Well, yeah...do I have cancer?” She looked at me very seriously and all but told me that I did. “I am very concerned,” she said. And then there was the waiting game...waiting for the biopsy results...I had a trip planned to visit my family down in San Diego that they said I could travel for and they’d call with the results. And so we tried to go about our normal routines, Jesse and I. Of course we had moments of sadness and worry, but we tried to remain positive that the results would come back negative.
But they didn’t. They were supposed to be in that Thursday. But the pathology was delayed. And so, as I was driving down i5 towards SD to visit my family, the phone call came: “You have cancer, and it’s spread to the lymph nodes. It’s important we do a bone scan and a ct scan to make sure it hasn’t spread”
And so began a whole new set of worry. Strangely and wonderfully, as I was driving down i5, with this heavy news in my heart, looking up into the mountains around me, and noticing all the bright colors of the wild flowers blooming, we drove right through a butterfly migration! Hundreds and hundreds of butterflies surrounded us as we drove for a good solid half hour! And then I knew I'd be ok, and I thanked God for the beautiful sign of reasurance.
When we returned to NorCal the next week, we had the scans done, and thank goodness they were clear. But ya know, I still have cancer, so that kinda sucks! I have invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast and axillary that is estrogen receptor positive and HER2 positive. This is a pretty aggressive form of breast cancer, but also fortunately, even though it is advanced stage, my prognosis is good.
Our group came together to support her and her family by helping to provide meals for her family, donating activities to help keep her kiddos busy and more! Our goal was to help her feel lifted in her time of need. It was overwhelming to witness a community of motherhood assemble, like the superheroes they are, to care for one of our own, and we realized we are capable of so much more than caring for one woman and one family. With 1 in 8 women being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, we knew that this was bigger...bigger than one mom. Bigger than our group. And so, Cindy's Race was born to give back to something bigger: Susan G Komen Foundation's "Race for a Cure." This year we are excited to celebrate the 6th Anniversary of our Annual Charity Cindy's Race in person and a virtual option, October 13, 2024.
