Description

The 25th Annual Cancer League of Colorado Race for Research 5K is excited to be back LIVE and in-person will be held LIVE and in-person Sunday, August 15, 2021, at Washington Park, Denver (or join us in our virtual at-home edition)! We will be following COVID-safe mitigation protocols, which means that we will have two starting times for runners and walkers to select (8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m). The health and safety of our participants and supporters are always our top priority. Because Denver's Covid restrictions could change with little advance notice, we will be unable to offer registration fee refunds in the event the in-person event cannot take place. In which case, all in-person will be switched to our virtual "at home" edition.

Run In-Person

There will be two starting times of 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Each start will be capped based on current COVID mitigation requirements. If you want to participate with family or team members, be sure to register for the same start time and we advise to register sooner than later in the case at start time cap sells out.   There will be no day-of-race in-person registration at Washington Park. You must register online, in advance!  Packets with your race bib and t-shirt will be available for pick up in advance of race day. Where and when will be announced on the Race for Research website at www.race4research.com and by email newsletters sent out this summer. Packets may also be picked up the morning of the race. Please arrive no sooner than 30 minutes prior to your start time. Masks/Face coverings are recommended.

Virtual "At Home" Run Edition

Choose to run a 5K -- or any distance you want -- on your own time and when and where it is most convenient for you. Pick up your race bib and t-shirt at the advance pick-up locations (details to be announced) or, for an additional $5 service fee, we'll mail you your packet. Help us spread awareness about the critical need to support cancer research done in Colorado by wearing your t-shirt while running in your neighborhood or at your favorite local park.

Help Us Fundraise

The Race for Research raises money for the Cancer League of Colorado, a non-profit charitable organization that is run entirely by volunteers with no paid staff or offices. The money raised goes directly to support cancer research and clinical trials performed at the University of Colorado Cancer Center or to cancer patient support organizations in Colorado. When registering, set up your fundraising page or create or join a fundraising team and send out emails or social media posts to request donations. There is no fundraising minimum to participate in the Race for Research, but we rely on our participants' voluntary fundraising efforts to help us meet our donation goal of $40,000 for the race.

Miracle Mile

To encourage fundraising efforts, participants who raise or donate at least $150 will be eligible to have a poster in the Cancer League of Colorado Miracle Mile. The Miracle Mile is a line of inspirational posters placed along the race route that honor loved ones touched by cancer. The Miracle Mile shows exactly who the Cancer League of Colorado has been fighting for more than 50 years. Once a participant has reached the minimum amount required, a Race for Research volunteer will reach out and gather information from you to create or renew your poster. The Miracle Mile will also be featured at other Cancer League fundraising events this year, including Over the Edge, the rappelling event which will be held September 16-18, 2021 in downtown Denver. Race posters will need to be ordered and finalized no later than August 1st.

How Will This Year's Race be Different?

If you're a veteran runner or walker of the Race for Research, you'll notice that things will be a little different this year because of COVID-19 Mitigation Safety Protocols. Due to this, we will still be offering a meaningful event for you but we will not be able to host a post-race Expo and family festival as we've done in the past. That means there won't be a pancake breakfast, a beer garden, a kiddie play area, a post-race awards ceremony, live band, or Expo area featuring sponsor and vendor booths. Unfortunately, we also will not be able to host Kaylene's Kids Fun Run, which has kicked off the race the past few years. The race will still be timed and the race route will be the same as in the past.  Once you complete the race, you'll be able to grab a bottle of water, some refreshments, and maybe a bit of sponsor swag.

In Memory of Michele Plachy-Rubin

The Race for Research was first organized and run in 1997 by the friends and family of Michele Plachy-Rubin, a young mother and kindergarten teacher who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1996. Michele walked the first race with her 1-year-old son but tragically lost her battle with cancer in 1998. Cancer League of Colorado has continued the race in her memory. Since 1997, the Race for Research has raised more than $1.6 million for cancer research.
