Description

On your marks, get set, WADDLE! Join Penguins International for a VIRTUAL bike/ waddle/ walk/ run/ cycling event to support penguin conservation. A virtual event means you can participate from anywhere as long as it’s within the event dates! It doesn’t matter if you’re on a stationary bike, riding around your neighborhood, mountain biking, walking or running. We’d love for you to show your support for penguins by cutting down on CO2 to save a species.

The Penguin Pedal - $45 Includes digital bib and basic finisher certificate

The Penguin Waddle/Walk/Run - $45 Includes digital bib and basic finisher certificate

Emperor Penguins have to travel at least 30 miles (50 km) and up to 95 miles (150 km) across the desolate Antarctic landscape. As a species reliant on sea ice for their survival we are encouraging participants to ride their bikes, walk, waddle, or run to lower carbon emissions. We don’t expect you to travel as far as Emperor Penguins do, only that you have fun while honoring these epic birds. On this virtual adventure you'll encounter 9 symbolic stops in Antarctica including several Emperor Penguin colonies and McMurdo Research Station! If you are running/walking/ waddling the total distance for the race is the equivalent of a half-marathon so 13.1 miles (21 km) total. The pedal distance is 41 miles (65 km).

How Do I Participate?

How do I participate?

After the race time or if you choose to do this challenge bit by bit, simply log-in to your participant page and record your distance traveled! Easy peasy, penguin squeezy. We recommend using something you already have like Google Maps, Fitbit, Apple watch, or Garmin. You could also use a free app like Strava to track your cycling. You can earn digital badges that symbolically represent visiting Emperor Penguin Colonies and McMurdo Station as you track your distance!  If you are running/walking/ waddling the total distance for the race is the equivalent of a half-marathon so 13.1 miles (21 km) total. The pedal distance is 41 miles (65 km).

Why Penguins?

Penguins International is a 501c3 non-profit organization based in Denver, Colorado. Our mission is to actively engage in penguin conservation projects to advance knowledge and understanding of penguins through scientific research, and to promote awareness of threats to penguins through conservation education programs. In a nutshell:  Protecting penguins, protecting the planet. Currently, 9 out of 18 species of penguins are threatened with extinction. Penguins are marine sentinels and indicators of ocean health and our programs are designed to protect them for future generations to enjoy! Help us spread our message by taking selfies and using the tags: #ThePenguinPedal

We’d love to see you rock your ride wearing your favorite penguin clothing or decorating your bike in a penguin style!

A special thank you to science illustrator Pooja Gupta for all the wonderful penguin graphics and badges! Please check out her work https://www.poojaslaboratory.com/
