Description
On February 23rd, Wesley’s 15th birthday, he was admitted to Egelston Children’s Hospital diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer in his left knee. Osteosarcomas are divided into 2 main groups: localized and metastatic. Wesley has metastatic osteosarcoma, which means cancer can spread to other parts of the body. Unfortunately, cancer spread to his lungs.
Chemo treatments began immediately and a surgery was planned to take place after his 6th treatment with hopes they could remove the cancer and save his leg. Unfortunately, while the chemo did kill some of the cancer, it had spread further down his leg and the only option was to amputate above the knee to ensure they would remove all of the osteosarcoma. On June 8th, 2021 Wesley’s leg was amputated and he will continue his chemo treatments through mid-Oct 2021 to hopefully kill the remaining ‘secondary’ cancer cells in his lungs.
The Dempsey family’s life has been turned upside down. Wesley’s father took a leave of absence from his career to be right by his side during his treatments. The family is currently on one income. All proceeds from this 5k will go to the Dempsey family.
