Description
Thank you for your interest in the Run To Remember 9/11 3rd Annual 5K hosted by Southern Illinois University Veterans Services and Recreational Sports Services.
As Americans, September 11th, 2001 is seared into our collective conscience as a nation. We watched in disbelief as the towers fell. As we move forward, we must never forget the lives of the civilians, first responders, police officers, firefighters and emergency services which were lost that day, in the towers, at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.
We must never forget the men and women who ran to join in our nation's defense after that day either.
Our nation's heroes, and their families, have continued to sacrifice to serve our country. We annually commemorate the lives that were lost on September 11th, 2001 by joining forces with the local community, fire departments, emergency services and police with a 5K Run to Remember.
We want to remember and support those personnel who continue to struggle after their service. On average, 22 Veterans commit suicide every single day --almost one an hour. We need to take a stand to make a change now.
As a result, this year, we have decided to partner with This Able Veteran, a local 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, to provide additional support to Veterans in need. Race day events will begin at 6PM and will include: the 5K race, a guest speaker, a 3-volley gun salute, the playing of TAPS, a presentation of the colors, the National Anthem, and finally, an Invocation from a VA Chaplain.
