10min SWIM - 30min BIKE - 20min RUN... and so much fun!

Join Lakeshore Sport & Fitness (LSF) for the kickoff to the 2022 Indoor Triathlon season!   An "indoor tri" is the perfect way to "get your feet wet" whether you are a first timer, or a veteran looking for a motivating challenge to test and benchmark your fitness as you prepare for your next racing season!   You can participate side by side with friends and family, co-workers, or individually alongside fellow triathletes.  Unlike traditional triathlon, this event is based on time rather than distance. The further you go during a specific portion, the more points you earn toward a final score. The 75-minute event consists of "60 minutes of triathlon" action as follows:

  • Swim: 10 minutes (in the pool)
    • Transition #1: 10-minutes
  • Bike: 30 minutes (on an indoor bike)
    • Transition #2: 5-minutes
  • Run: 20 minutes (on a treadmill)

Indoor triathlons are fun, beginner friendly events for all ability levels!   Most indoor triathlons are even in relatively shallow depth pools where you can "aqua-jog" the swim if you aren't comfortable swimming.  Any swim stroke is welcome, and since the events are time-based (not distance based), you can take breaks as needed anytime!   The clock will keep running and you may not "score" as high in total distance, but these events are all about participation - so they are great fun no matter how fast or "social" you take it!   So invite your friends, family, and anyone looking for a great fitness challenge!

Each athlete can self select their preferred wave "corral" start time during registration, but please note that wave start times are subject to change.  Note that you must plan to arrive about 30 minutes before your start time to allow sufficient time to check in, set up your transition gear, and check in to the pool deck approximately 10 minutes before your start time for final instructions and warmups.  The earlier you register, the more start time options you'll have - so REGISTER EARLY to guarantee the widest selection of start times if you prefer to race early or late!  See the "FIND A PARTICIPANT" menu on the website to see which "Corral" you are assigned to!

TENTATIVE WAVE START TIMES (subject to change):

  1. CORRAL WAVE 1 = 9:00am start time
  2. CORRAL WAVE 2 = 9:40am start time
  3. CORRAL WAVE 3 = 10:20am start time
  4. CORRAL WAVE 4 = 11:00am start time
  5. CORRAL WAVE 5 = 11:40am start time

Participants will NEED to bring their own SWIM, BIKE, and RUN apparel and gear, including (but not limited to):

  • Swim Goggles
  • Swim suit (or Tri Suit)
  • Running shoes
  • T-shirt (we recommend something technical & moisture-wicking) and appropriate apparel for cycling and running
  • Facemask (as required by local city guidelines:

We also recommend bringing any OPTIONAL triathlon-specific gear and items that might make your racing experience more enjoyable:

  • Triathlon shorts (cycling/running shorts with a moisture-wicking pad)
  • Cycling shoes (bike pedals are dual sided for sneakers or SPD compatible cycling shoes)
  • Headphones/music (are permitted for INDOOR triathlons)
  • Sports nutrition (gels, gatorade, spare water bottle, etc.)
  • Extra face-masks (to replace any that might get sweaty or wet!)
  • Gym/Transition bag (you may set up your transition area along the large raised pool deck area - but no nudity on the pool deck please!)

Towels and Locker Room access are available.
The men's locker room requires bringing your own locker lock for secure storage.  The women's locker room uses a keycard system - simply provide your ID at the front desk for a locker keycard.

Water bottles, Electrolyte hydration options, and light snacks (bananas, bars, etc) will be available to all during the event. Athletes may wish to bring additional nutrition (gels, etc.).

Please plan to arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled start time, in order to allow sufficient time for check in (10min), setting up your transition gear in the locker rooms or pool deck (10min), and report to the pool deck 10 minutes before your scheduled start time for instructions and optional warmups.

Report to the pool deck (lowest basement level) for lane assignments 10 minutes before your scheduled start time.  You'll complete a 10-minute swim where every length (~25yds) and lap (50yd) will be counted towards your total distance completed within 10 minutes.  Each of the wave's participants will have a private lane for their swim. Participants are required to touch the wall before the start horn.  After that, participants may use any swim stroke (or even walk!) to reach the other end of the pool and turn-around. Swim timer staff and volunteer will count total lengths achieved during the 10-minute session. Staff will blow a SINGLE whistle announcing a 1-minute warning, then blow a DOUBLE whistle to announce the swim conclusion. Participants will only be given credit for a full length if they reach either end of the pool and touch the wall to get credit for each 25 yards completed.  Staff will record each participant's total pool lengths achieved and you are welcome to verify results prior to moving to the BIKE.

Participants have 10 minutes to proceed from the pool deck and up to the Bike area. Please be prompt and considerate of others while moving throughout the club.  You may use the Men's  & Women's locker rooms as your transition areas, but note that they are several levels up, so plan your time because 10 minutes goes by fast!  To save time we encourage use of the upper pool deck area to set up small transition areas on a towel (if no wardrobe changes are required), or use additional Men's & Women's restrooms available off the pool deck area with 2 showers each to rinse off and change.

The bike portion will be held in a dedicated area.  We may plan to stage the BIKE area on LEVEL 2 along the INDOOR TRACK near the CARDIO / TREADMILL areas to save time, however if weather permits, we may use the roof deck area.  Note that Chicago city mask guidance may require face masks whenever you are indoors and not actively eating & drinking.   Indoor stationary SCHWINN bikes include integrated power (4iiii ANT+ compatible), cadence and distance meters. To ensure accuracy, all bikes will be calibrated prior to the event.  Participants will be guided to a specific bike for their session, where you may adjust the saddle, handlebars, etc. prior to the start.  All bikes will have pedals with toe cages (for regular running shoes) and SPD cleat connections (for cycling shoes). Staff and volunteers will assist and announce an official start for the entire wave, ensuring all bike computers are cleaned and reset at the beginning of the 30-minute ride. Participants may adjust their tension and cadence throughout the session, which impacts distance achieved - you'll cover more distance if you generate more POWER.  After 30 minutes, Bike Staff will ensure all participants stop accordingly and record each bike computer's distance.  Athletes can verify their results before proceeding to the Run portion.

Participants have a brief 5-minute break to proceed from the BIKE area to the RUN (treadmill) area.

The run will be held on standard LIFE FITNESS treadmills.  Staff and volunteers will assist you starting (with the push of a green "Quick Start" button). Treadmills may be set to a 0% incline or higher (no negative decline allowed), and adjusted to any speed manually using increase and decrease buttons, or entering a specific speed number (e.g. set "5" and "0" for 5.0 mph, and then hit "enter").  Participants must remain on the treadmill's belt for the duration of the session (no "straddling" the tread at any time), and must support themselves without holding onto the handrails or console (unless required and pre-approved for medical reasons).  Anyone who steps off the treadmill belt or stops the treadmill before the 20-minutes expire will have their results recorded immediately as their final result.  If you plan to take a walking break, we recommend simply changing the speed to 2.0 to 4.0 mph for walking breaks instead of stopping completely.  Anyone who gains an unfair advantage by supporting themselves or taking their feet off the tread during the 20 minutes will receive a preliminary warning for the first offense, then a variable time penalty for additional offenses (1 minute for every minute of offense).  After 20 minutes, note your DISTANCE (miles) covered as staff record your results and hit the stop button.  Athletes can verify results with volunteers before treadmills are disinfected between participants.

Congrats, you are now an official triathlon finisher!!!  Enjoy some celebratory photos, finisher medals, snacks, and celebrate with your "wave" of new fellow triathlon friends!

City of Chicago COVID SAFETY

Please be aware of City of Chicago Department of Health guidelines that may require proof of vaccine and wearing masks whenever indoors.  These guidelines may change, so please visit the City of Chicago website  and see the Lakeshore Sport & Fitness website for additional details and updates at

Staff and volunteers must wear masks at all times, but masks are NOT required while actively swimming (that would be a challenge!).  Our event may include cycling outdoors on the rooftop where masks may be removed while actively competing, but depending on weather conditions and air temperature, the cycling component may be moved indoors and thus MASKS MAY BE REQUIRED during both the BIKE and RUN, except when actively eating or drinking.  We will make appropriate adjustments to keep all bike stations socially distanced in open air areas and the club has implemented several additional safety precautions, including advanced air filtration, as outlined at

We recommend bringing two masks (or more) as your masks may get sweaty when working out - as many athletes prefer to have a fresh mask for each event when competing in indoor triathlons.  We strongly suggest the use of workout-specific "sport masks" such as the Under Armor "UA SportsMask" that can be comfortably worn while working out at higher intensities:

For public gatherings and events, City of Chicago guidelines require attendees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or have a negative COVID-19 test no more than 72 hours prior to attending. To create a safe event, participants, guests, and volunteers may be asked to present documentation of vaccination or recent negative test status.  We recommend taking a photo of your vaccination or test as a backup in case you forget to bring your actual documentation.  If you need a test, please see several nearby pharmacies that provide low-cost rapid testing options such as the Abbott BinaxNOW COVID-19 Rapid Self-Test.

All participants who complete all three events (swim+bike+run) will receive a finisher medal!

Results are determined by the total distance you cover across a set amount of time (following the original USA Triathlon "USATri60" format) where there will be a different multiplier applied to your total distance for each discipline and all three adjusted distances will be combined into a total "adjusted" distance determines your overall finish "score".  Your distance will be adjusted by the multiplier from each of the three distances as follows:

Results will be determined following USA TRIATHLON standards for each 5-year age group, per gender (M/F):
19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80+

Results will be available in near real time at

Awards will be issued to overall winners for each gender:
Overall Male, Overall Female.

Spectators will be allowed into the event.  Liability waivers must be signed upon entry and require showing proof of photo ID.  The waiver can be complete at the FRONT DESK when you arrive, but to save time we recommend completing this form in the morning before you arrive:

Additionally, Masks must be worn, and appropriate social distance kept throughout the session.  City of Chicago guidelines may require showing proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test for all sporting events, so please plan accordingly as you may be asked to show appropriate documentation to meet this requirement.
