Event Cancellation Notice

[Updated 7/18/20]: Due to lower than anticipated demand, we regret to announce the cancellation of this weekend’s Open Water Swim event in Hammond. While we remain confident in replicating last month’s safe, exciting athlete experience, we recognize that our regional endurance audience may not be ready to commit given the nation’s continued challenge around Covid-19.

Registered participants should have received an email with further details. Please contact us at with questions or other needs. While this isn’t the moment for us to reconvene, we hope to produce additional events in the near future. We promise to keep you posted accordingly.

Thank you for your continued support.
Stay safe and be well.

The Nudge Mill, the same team who operates the historic Chicago Triathlon Open Water Swim Series, along with Leon's Triathlon and the Chicago Triathlon is proud to host a second round of this summer swim series. Thanks to overwhelmingly positive feedback, we're coming back to Hammond. This event will look identical to the first session held on June 27 (watch the post-event video recap), offering two separate start times (8:30 or 10:00 AM) and limiting capacity to 50 participants each. This event is USA Triathlon sanctioned, monitored by certified lifeguards and committed to supporting our community in this unique moment.

These sessions have supported more than 12,000 swimmers since inception in 2012. This swim program was originally designed to help new triathletes safely experience open water swimming with guidance from local experts. Volunteer coaches provide intimate, small group instruction and drills to build open water familiarity and confidence. General open water swims and a competitive Aquathlon portion were added to provide an outlet for experienced and/or competitive swimmers. Due to Chicago's continued lakefront restrictions, these events moved across the border to Hammond, Indiana -- only 15 miles from downtown Chicago.
Safety Protocols
The safety of our participants, staff, coaches and community are paramount. The event description may look familiar, but the event experience will be quite different this season due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. While this event may be moving across Chicago's border, we will maintain the highest of standards when it comes to proven virus mitigation tactics. Thanks to guidance from the CDC, medical experts, local leadership, as well as the community's input from a recent survey, we are making several adjustments to the event, most notably:

  • Restricted venue access (participants only, no spectators beyond parents of minors, beach is closed to the public)
  • Greatly reduced capacity, especially for swim clinics
  • Social distancing required throughout the session
  • No-contact check-in process
  • Masks worn by participants and staff through the duration (except when in the water)
  • Secured, self-service gear check system
  • Self-service water bottle station
  • Mandatory event rotation. Participants must physically exit the event zone when their session concludes.

Beyond these protocols, participants are required to take their own precautions and be self-responsible. Those who may feel sick or have a fever, and those who may have been in contact with someone unrecovered from Covid-19 should not participate in this event. Participants are advised to avoid any and all contact with other individuals (ie. inadvertent touching, hand shakes, hugs, group photos, etc.).

Event Options
This event features three unique opportunities to participate:

  • Open Water Swim Clinic: Private swim instruction will be offered for beginner and intermediate-level swimmers who prefer to gain open water tips and techniques. Swimmers will be placed into groups of 12 individuals (10 swimmers, 2 coaches) with similar experience levels and goals. Coaches will facilitate a 45-minute, in-water session.
  • Swim On-Your-Own: We get it. Swimming is such a novelty. For those who have plenty of open water experience and simply want access to Lake Michigan, we're offering a supported long-distance swimming session. This option is great for individuals who want to swim on their own while friends or family participate in the swim clinic.
  • Competitive Aquathlon: A competitive swim + run event. Participants looking to test their open water endurance will start at a dedicated time alongside a handful of fellow athletes. Swimmers will complete a 750m or 1500m swim (their choice) followed by a 2.5 mile run along the lakefront trails. Staff will manually record splits, posting results following the event.

Event Times & Capacities
To further support social distancing efforts, participants must select from one of two participation windows:

  • 8:30 - 9:30 a.m.
  • 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.

Each window will allow a maximum of 50 total participants (100 total across both participation windows). Following their session, participants must exit the water and the dedicated event area to allow adequate space for the next session. Participants are welcome to move outside the event area to continue swimming on their own if they choose.

Wetsuit Rentals
Urban Tri Gear is offering 5-day wetsuit rentals ($55 sleeveless, $65 full-sleeve) as part of this event. Please contact Urban Tri Gear to secure your rental. They will coordinate all logistics. Due to anticipated demand from cold water temperatures, we strongly advise all swimmers obtain their own wetsuit prior to attending the session. They may have a limited supply of rentals available on event day, but no guarantees of proper sizing.
Registration will open Monday, June 22. Priority access will open to those who provided input to the open water swim survey via email link at 11:00 a.m. CT. A public registration link will be posted at 12:00 p.m. the same day. These events will sell-out. Wait lists will not be established. There will be no on-site registration.

All participants must be 18 years old by December 31, 2020 in order to participate. Youth ages under 18 are also allowed under parental supervision (who must wear masks on-site). Registration is $30 for the first 50 registrants, increasing to $40 for the final 50 registrants.

Refund Policy
This event has a strict no-refund and no-transfer policy, especially due to a limited capacity. If the event is hosted and you are unable to attend for any reason, you are not eligible for reimbursement. Should the event be cancelled outright, event staff will communicate a reimbursement policy relevant to the situation.

Future Events
Subsequent swim events may be scheduled in the future, possibly on a monthly or semi-monthly basis, relative to interest in, and feedback from, the first scheduled event. Our ultimate goal is to safely provide a series of swim events, including a final/culminating event toward the end of the season.

Parking & Directions
The event will be held at Hammond Lakefront Beach located at 701 Casino Center Drive, Hammond, IN 46320. The beach is accessible within the Hammond Marina complex, located immediately west of the Horseshoe Casino. Free parking is available in the expansive marina parking lot. Drivers need to check-in at the security house located at the entranceway.

Bike to Hammond
Cycling to Hammond is relatively simple from Chicago, accessible from the Lakefront Trail and South Shore Extension into Hammond, then via the Marquette Greenway. Click here to view the expansive trail system maps. Bike racks are available throughout the beach property.
Private Beach Access
This is a private beach event. Lakefront Beach is NOT open to the public until 11:00 AM on Saturday. For safety reasons, non-registered individuals (including spectators) are restricted from accessing the beach. They will need to remain in the parking lot through the duration of the event, or until the beach publicly opens.

Beach Facilities
Changing rooms and restroom facilities are located in the Marina Building at the east end of the beach. Porto-lets are available at the west end of the beach, near the event venue. A self-service bottled water station will be provided for participants. It is recommended that participants bring their own nutrition if needed.

Gear Check
Participants driving to the venue are asked to leave gear (especially all valuables) inside their car prior to beginning their session. For those without car access, a secured self-service gear check station will be available on the beach. Staff will allow participants to enter/exit the compound on their own, then verify the gear matches the participant number before removing any articles, similar to a Transition area. Participants who wish to use the system will need to request a gear check tag at check-in.

Further Event Information

Full event details will be emailed to registrants prior to each session, and this page will continually be updated before the event. Event staff will monitor water conditions and communicate any important details via social media, this site and email. Please follow the Facebook event page or for real-time updates.

Coach Recruitment
The historic success of this entire Swim Clinic operation revolves around support from our dedicated coaching community. Dozens of incredible local coaches support each of our sessions, and we are constantly incorporating new, qualified triathlon and swim-savvy coaches into the clinic curriculum. These sessions are a great way to give back to the sport, as well as meet potential new personal training clients. Please email us should you be interested in lending a hand.
