Description

Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida is a family-friendly, non-competitive one-mile fundraiser that raises awareness about Spina Bifida and celebrates the accomplishments of those living with Spina Bifida and the challenges it brings.

Walk-N-Roll is the biggest West Michigan Spina Bifida event of the year. We invite you to be part of this amazing community dedicated to building a better and brighter future for all those impacted by Spina Bifida. Whether you're joining us to connect with the community, fundraise with a friend or family member, or are dedicated to improving lives, Every Mile Makes a Difference.

Why Walk-N-Roll?
Connect: Walk-N-Rolls bring people impacted by Spina Bifida, their parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, relatives, healthcare providers, and often key community stakeholders together. It’s a festive gathering filled with fun, smiles, celebration, and connections.

Raise Awareness: Spina Bifida is the most common permanently disabling birth defect associated with life. Approximately 166,000 individuals in the United States have Spina Bifida and yet most people don't know what Spina Bifida is or what to expect. It’s a type of neural tube defect (NTD) that occurs when a baby’s neural tube fails to develop or close properly – the literal meaning for Spina Bifida is “split spine.” Typically occurring within the first 28 days of pregnancy while the neural tube is forming, Spina Bifida often occurs before a woman knows she is pregnant. Commonly referred to as the “snowflake condition” of birth defects because no two cases are the same, Spina Bifida can range from mild to severe. The severity depends on everything from the size of the opening to the location on the spine. This event is such an important opportunity to share information with loved ones and our local communities.

Fundraise: The money raised at this event helps fund scholarships for individuals with Spina Bifida right here in our West Michigan Community.

FAQ

Do I register individually or as a team?

Register each participant of the Walk-n-Roll individually and then the fundraising will be done as a team which is explained below.

How do I form a fundraising team?

Click "donate" above, then "become a fundraiser", pick a name, add a photo of your hero, add a description for your friends/family, and share the link. People can donate to your fundraiser team even if they aren't able to participate in the walk itself. We can also accept donations via cash, checks, and Venmo at the time of the event.

What is done with the money fundraised at this event?

All monies will go directly back into funding scholarships and community events for youth and adults with Spina Bifida right here in West Michigan. We provide scholarships for education, therapy, home accessibility adaptations, recreational and sports equipment, and adaptive equipment.

Will this event be indoor or outdoor?

This event will be inside of the Mary Free Bed YMCA on their rubberized track. 5 laps of the indoor track is 1 mile.

Who will be in attendance?

Friends, family, neighbors, and professionals from the community. We will have Coloplast and Mary Free Bed Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports there to answer questions and connect with the community.

Does the walk begin at the designated time, or can people drop in at any time within the time frame to complete the walk?

We will start the walk/roll portion of the event at approximately 6:30pm as a group.
