Mount Meru is in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. It is the 2nd highest peak in Tanzania, and the 5th highest in Africa. On a clear day the peak of the mountain can be seen from areas of the Kivulini Hospital neighborhood. A climb to the peak is just under 5 km. Walkers, runners and bikers, etc. are invited to choose one of 3 distances - Meru Summit Shot - 5k ; Peak Bagger - 10k - Height of Mount Meru + Mount Kilimanjaro ; or Double Trouble - 20k for doubling the height of both peaks.
This multi-sport race will raise funds for the Kivulini Maternity Centre. The Kivulini Maternity Centre is a hospital based in Arusha Region, Northern Tanzania. It seeks to improve maternal health outcomes for vulnerable and marginalized women and girls of childbearing age living in poverty across rural Tanzania.
On May 23rd, 2023 the United Nations and many other healthcare organizations observe the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula in order to raise awareness of this complication of childbirth. In addition to providing care for mothers during pregnancy, labor and after delivery, the Kivulini Maternity Centre provides hundreds of women who have experienced complications in childbirth support and surgical intervention in order to improve their health and well-being.
All proceeds from the event will go to the hospital, and 100% of the donations will go to the care and support of the women and children supported by Maternity Africa and the Kivulini Maternity Centre.
