In Memory of Jared Palmer

The Capital City Race is dedicated to mental health awareness. We recognize the rich and too-short life of Jared Palmer, who lost his life to mental illness in November 2021. Proceeds from this event will go to benefit Jared Palmer’s kids, George and Ellen, and the other portion will go to the Cole County Treatment Court Programs including DWI court, Drug court, Co Occurring Court, and Veterans court.

With the support of community partners, donations, and sponsors, the Capital City Race raised over $10,000 (2023) and over $15,000 (2024) that was split between Jared's children's tuition fund and the Cole County Treatment Courts (Veteran's Court, Adult Drug Court, DWI Court, and Co-Occurring Court). In 2023, proceeds assisted the Treatment Courts by funding a Thanksgiving Dinner for approximately 100 participants, many of whom would not have had a dinner otherwise. Additionally, proceeds funded a motivational guest speaker, Josh Buffington, who guided Treatment Court participants through a practice regarding change and goal setting. Proceeds have also assisted to offset the costs of the free and community-wide events for the Cole County Recovery Awareness Week that is held during Recovery Month every September.
