About Safe+Sound Somerset

At Safe+Sound Somerset (Safe+), helping survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence find hope is at the core of our work. We exist so that survivors never feel alone and know that compassionate professional help is only a phone call or text away. Our mission is to prevent and respond to domestic and sexual abuse with programs that provide safety, support and education for individuals, families, and the community.

Since 1978, Safe+Sound Somerset has been answering the call of domestic violence survivors – often literally – with calls to our 24/7 hotline that are the first step in breaking free from the violence and abuse for many who are being beaten, battered, and berated. We hear it and see it everyday - the mounting need, the increasing calls.

As of October 1, 2021, Safe+ expanded our trauma-informed services to support survivors of sexual violence. Now, adults and children who have experienced sexual assault or abuse can access the same high quality crisis intervention services - 24/7 helpline, Sexual Assault Response Team, advocacy, and counseling - that have been available to survivors of domestic abuse in Somerset County for over 40 years.

Our services are available to everyone, regardless of income status, cultural or ethnic background, language spoken, gender identity or sexual orientation. All services are confidential and available at no cost, in multiple locations throughout the county, and are available in English, Spanish and other languages as needed. Our programs fall within four primary focus areas:

  • Crisis Intervention: Creating SAFETY - 24-hour Call and Text Helpline; Emergency Safe House; Domestic Violence Liaisons with DCP&P in Somerset and Hunterdon Counties; Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Response Teams
  • Advocacy: Building HOPE - Legal Advocacy including Pro-bono Attorneys; Financial Empowerment Center; Housing First Initiative
  • Counseling: Empowering HEALING – Individual Counseling for adult and child survivors of domestic and sexual abuse, including the evidence-based Prolonged Exposure, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapies focusing on healing from trauma; psychoeducational Group Counseling for adults
  • Outreach & Prevention – Educational programs, workshops and trainings related to domestic and sexual abuse, teen dating violence and trauma, which provide the information, skills and tools needed to break the cycle of violence; and 60-hour trainings for volunteers who will work with clients
