Destination Imagination Run the World Virtual 5K

Global Finals 2020 - our Summer of Creativity event – was a HUGE success and we loved seeing all of our teams’ incredible solutions and out-of-the-box thinking. And since we still have a few weeks of summer left, we’re planning to keep the Summer of Creativity running! 

Join us for the Destination Imagination Run the World Virtual 5K! That’s right - we are RUNNING THE WORLD to celebrate creativity and to support Destination Imagination (DI) and we want YOU (and all of your creative friends and family) to be a part of it. 

So, grab your headphones, lace up those sparkly shoes, and put on your most creative outfit – we’re going virtual.

Here’s how it works. Since this race is virtual, there is no specific starting point, so you can start anywhere you want (your basement or garage, a treadmill, a park, etc.). Just set your watch or favorite running app, hit “start” and you’re off! You can walk, run, jump, skip or roll your way through the 5K. Like we said, the course will be one that YOU create - just as long as the route you’ve chosen is safe! 

Since this IS a DI event, we are asking you to go ALL OUT and show the world just how creative you are. Create a silly hat out of found objects, decorate your race attire or wear a homemade costume - like a duct tape tutu or a dragon costume made from used soda can tabs. Go crazy - as long as it showcases your personal creativity and has a high probability of turning heads as you sprint by, we’re into it! 

Steps to Run

1. Register for the DI Run the World Virtual 5K. Don’t forget to get to pick up your swag pack! For an extra $25, you’ll get a Global Finals 2020 water bottle, towel and T-shirt! If you’re feeling extra generous, you can also make a donation to further support DI’s mission.
2. Invite your friends and family to register, participate and help Destination Imagination build resilient kids and communities all over the world. It’s a win-win-win!
3. Get your hot glue gun and everything that you own so you can create the greatest paper-mache version of a phoenix rising out of a flaming pot of gold (or something else just as dramatic and fabulous) to wear while you run or walk.
4. (Optional step). Train to run or walk 3.1 miles. Make sure you train in a socially distant environment. Remember, stay 6 feet (or 2 meters) apart!
5. Download your Custom Race Bib on Runsignup, print it and wear it proudly on the day you race.
6. From September 4 through the last day of summer, September 22, put it all together and conquer that 5K, you Box n’ Baller! Find your route, download a free running app, flip on that killer Global Finals 2020: Summer of Creativity Spotify playlist and get going! Again, keep it classy, keep it safe and keep it distant (6 feet or 2 meters apart from your friends and family if you’re running in a pack).
7. Once you’re done, download, print and hang your Race Completion Certificate in a prominent place in your house for everyone to marvel at your abilities.
8. Share with the world how rad your run was, tag us @boxandball on Instagram and @DestinationImagination on Facebook with #DIruntheworld and let everyone how much fun you had while running for a good cause! We will also share some of our favorite race outfits on our social media!

5K Race Categories

For this 5K race, all self-reported results will fall into the following broad categories:

1- Boys and Girls 9 years of age or younger (as of day the participant runs the 5K)

2- Boys and Girls 10-17 years of age (as of day the participant runs the 5K)

3- Men and Women 18 years of age or older (as of day the participant runs the 5K)

Race result can be added by clicking HERE or by selecting the RESULTS option on the upper right side of the race cover page. 

5K Race Category Winner Social Shout-out

All category winners will receive a shout-out on DI’s social media.

Creative Outfit Awards

The top 3 most creatively outfitted racers will receive a shout-out on DI’s social media and a SUPER SECRET MYSTERY PRIZE DI swag bag (oooh, ahhhh, special, really special, REALLY REALLY SPECIAL, what could it be?!). Get working on that flair if you want to find out! To be considered for an award for your creative attire, you must be registered for the race and email us a photo of you wearing your attire. Please email your photo(s) to advancement@dihq.org with the subject line: DI Run the World Creative Outfit Submission. Be sure to include your full name and address in the email. Only individuals may enter, no groups. If you are under 18 years of age, you must have a parent or legal guardian submit your photo entry. Failure to comply with any of these rules will result in disqualification. Race attire will be appraised on overall creativity! (DI staff and Board of Trustees members are not eligible for the creative outfit award.)

Refer Friends and Family, Get Rewarded! 

What can be better about getting your friends and family to participate in this virtual run with you? How about getting rewarded for it! Refer all your friends and family and when just 3 of them register using your referral code, you will automatically be refunded your $8 registration fee. Just make sure they use the custom URL referral code you receive in your race confirmation email. 

It Pays to be Generous

Be sure to register FIRST in order to get your rewards. A donation option will be available when you register.

Make a donation of at least $25 - get rewarded!

When you register as a race participant and make a donation of at least $25, your race registration fee will be waived.

Make a donation of at least $50 - get more rewards!

If you make a donation of $50 or more, we will waive your $8 registration fee AND send you free Global Finals 2020 swag (T-shirt, water bottle and towel). You can look good and feel good about supporting DI.
