Paulette's PHYSICAL DISTANCE - Virtual Race

No one knows the importance of maintaining your health and fitness even through the most difficult times than Paulette Stallone. For the last ten years she has hosted a 5K/1 Mile event to benefit the colorectal cancer program at CentraState – a program she credits for saving her life when she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.
This year's event will now be 100% virtual – because even though we cannot be together she still wants to inspire the community to get outside and run (or walk) and live your healthiest life. We are inviting the community to join us for a virtual event on Sunday May 3rd – our original date – to make the best of the Physical Distance – staying socially connected but physically apart. This run has no minimum or maximum distance – whether you want to do 1 mile, 5K or a 10k - the only requirement is that you do it alone or with members of your household!
While registration is free, donations are appreciated.
All registrants will also receive:
• virtual swag bag filled with goodies from our community members
• electronic bib to download
• access to virtual starting line hosted by Paulette
• entry for a one year membership to CentraState Fitness & Wellness Center (new members only)
• raffle entries for special prizes
• access to order special event shirt

All donations to this event will be designated to CentraState Healthcare Foundation’s Coronavirus Relief Fund to continue to provide life-saving medical equipment to our hospitals most critical areas. Anyone who is currently registered will automatically be registered for the virtual event on May 3, 2020 and for next year (2021) – at no additional cost.
Thank you all for your patience, understanding and generosity. We hope to “see” you all on May 3rd!

Paulette's Story

It’s February 19, 2009. Do you remember what you did that day?

I was sick. Inexplicably, suddenly, terribly sick. My daughter Nicole – then just 20 years old – drove me to the hospital. My doctor admitted me as a trauma patient. Out came the needles. My heart rate faded. Looking back now, it’s like I am recounting an episode of ‘ER’ or ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ but it was, and still is, very real. Most people were coming off the post-holiday-season-rush and Valentine’s Day sweetness. My family and I were forced into a new, cold, scary reality.

At just 44 years old, with no family history of the disease, I was diagnosed with rectal cancer. I had no risk factors.

So what did I do? I ran. I put on my sneakers and I ran, and I kept running. I went to chemotherapy and then I ran some more. If there are only three things in this world I am sure of, they are:

1. CentraState and my team of doctors saved my life.
2. My people – my family, friends and neighbors – saved my life.
3. Running saved my life.

This year is the 11th Anniversary of my event – Paulette’s C of Blue 5K/1 Mile. I started this event while still on chemo and it has grown to one of the largest colorectal cancer events in the state. It is a day filled with my favorite things – family, friends, fitness and fun; and all proceeds benefit the colorectal cancer programs and services at CentraState.

In 2018 and 2019, funds we raised were used to purchase equipment used to monitor colorectal surgery patients’ fluid levels during and after surgery. Due to the success and positive outcomes of these new monitors they have even been used for even more complicated surgeries. Funds were also used to provide colorectal screenings to the un- and underinsured.

Colorectal cancers are the third most common in both men and women, and it is estimated that there will be over 137,000 new diagnoses in the United States this year alone. With increased awareness, recommended screenings for earlier detection, and integrative therapies for patients and survivors, we can continue to save and impact lives right here in Monmouth and Ocean counties.

Please join me and my family on Sunday, May 3rd – as a sponsor, donor, walker or runner – and let’s kick colorectal cancer’s butt.

My deepest thanks,
Paulette Stallone
