38th Annual Verona Labor Day Classic / Virtual 5K
Verona UNICO and the Essex Running Club are proud to present the 38th Annual Verona Labor Day Classic being held this year as a Virtual 5K. Please try to support this event since all of the proceeds go towards local charities and scholarships.
You can complete the virtual run any time during Labor Day weekend (Sept 5 - 7) either on the certified course for the Verona Labor Day Classic 5K or you can pick your own route to run. The cost is only $10 per person or you can make a donation if you are unable to run. All participants will be entered in a raffle for a $100 gift card to Fleet Feet Montclair.
This event is organized by volunteers from Verona UNICO and the Essex Running Club with all of the proceeds going towards local charities and scholarships. Verona UNICO awards several scholarships each year to college bound seniors from Verona and the Essex Running Club awards the Doug Williams Memorial Scholarship each year to college bound seniors at Montclair High School.
Disclaimer: You will be participating in this event entirely at your own risk. Please do not run on unsafe roads or areas that have been closed off to the public. Practice social distancing and follow any other requirements set forth by local, state and federal guidelines. This is a virtual run only; please do not gather as a group in any one location at the same time.
- Sign up for the event any time between now and Sept. 7.
- Print out the custom bib to wear when you run the event.
- Decide whether to use the course for the Verona Labor Day Classic 5K or pick your own route or run.
- Complete your run on Labor Day weekend any time between 6:00 am on Sat, Sept. 5 and 8:00 pm on Mon, Sept 7.
- Submit your finishing time to the Results page on Runsignup.
- Post your photos and race reports to the Facebook page for the event.
There are no awards for this year's race but all participants will be entered in a raffle for a $100 gift card to Fleet Feet Montclair.

- Log-in to RunSignUp and go to your profile by clicking the circle in the upper right corner.
- Scroll down to Upcoming Events and locate this event.
- Click on the View Digital Bib to print your bib.
- Click on the Submit Virtual Results link to submit your results.
Verona UNICO awards several scholarships each year to deserving college bound seniors from Verona. Applicants are evaluated based on their scholastic grade point average, SAT or ACT scores, a letter of recommendation from a member of the community, school faculty or school administration, and a 250 - 500 word essay pertaining to "Someone, not related to you, or something that has influenced you to be a better person or has motivated you to be a contributing citizen for the betterment of your school, community, family or assisting others in need".
The Essex Running Club awards the Doug Williams Memorial Scholarship each year to recognize some deserving college bound seniors at Montclair High School who have been outstanding in track and field / cross country while demonstrating academic excellence, leadership and community service. Doug was a graduate of Montclair High School and a beloved member of the Essex Running Club when he was killed by a hit and run driver on Upper Mountain Avenue in October 2011.
