Description

The Port Washington Winter Run is a 5K Run starting and finishing in North Hempstead Beach Park, Port Washington. The 5K loop starts in the park and heads north and then south along West Shore Road, ending back in the Park.  This race is open to runners ages 13 and older who can run 5K in 60 minutes or less. All runners will receive a long-sleeve performance shirt.  Finishers receive a medal. At race end, awards based on gun time are given to the top three athletes overall, male/female and the top three athletes, male/female in each 5-year age group.

There will be a Post Race Party in a heated tent with live music and lunchBeer is being donated and served by the Greenport Harbor Brewing Company, a craft brewer, who will be producing a small special batch JUST for our race.

Runners under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or by an adult person authorized by the child's parent or guardian in order to enter the tent. Runners age 21 and older will receive a bracelet, which will be ID for purposes of enjoying the beer.   

Proceeds benefit the Community Chest of Port Washington, a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization whose mission is to give grants to charities that serve Port Washington residents and to provide below-cost rent to charities, helping them fulfill their missions.  

 

Race Guidelines

  • Minimum age is 13. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult (21 years or older). If not running, adult accompanying a minor will have to pay a $20 fee to enter the heated tent after the race. Children under the age of 16 years will not be allowed to enter the post-race tent unless accompanied by his or her parent or guardian or by an adult accompanying the minor.

  • Wristbands(if you are 21) will be distributed with the race packet. ALL MUST wear their wristbands to consume alcohol .
  • Although it may not seem obvious to all, NO beer will be served to ANYONE UNDER 21 years of age. 
  • This is a USA Track & Field sanctioned Running race.
  • Race is a 5K; this is a change from prior years.
  • Strollers, skateboards, bicycles and dogs are not permitted. 
  • Fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • The Race is open to participants with a running pace of 15:00, and a finish time not to exceed 60 minutes.
  • No vehicles will be allowed to leave the Park until everyone finishes the race.

The race reserves the right to ask a participant to leave if Race Guidelines are not followed.

Race Packet Pick Up

Race packet includes wristband( if you are over 21), performance long-sleeve shirt and race bib.

Race day, Saturday, March 25, 2023 7:30-8:30 AM in the tent at North Hempstead Beach Park Parking Field.

Fees for same day registration are higher ($75 for 21 and older; $50 for age 13-20). Shirts can not be guaranteed for same day registrants.  

 

Awards & Medals

All finishers receive a medal. At race end, awards based on GUN TIME are given to top the top three (3) athletes overall, male and female and to the top three (3) male and female finishers in the following age groups: 13-15; 16-19; 20-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70 +.  Unclaimed awards can be picked up at the Community Chest of Port Washington, 382 Main Street, Port Washington, NY after the race.  Call 767-2121.

Post Event Party

Post-race we will be hosting a party in a heated tent in the North Hempstead Beach Park parking lot.  We will have food, beer by Greenport Harbor Brewing Company and live music by Off Peak.  Greenport Harbor Brewing Company will be bringing a SPECIAL SMALL BATCH created just for the race and treating us to several of their unique and delicious brews.

Participants over 21 will be issued a wrist band.  Those with under age 21  will not be able to get or drink beer beer.

No runner under the age of 16 will be admitted to the tent unless accompanied by his or her parent or guardian or by an adult person 21 years of age or older authorized by the child's parent or guardian. Those supervising and accompanying minors, who are not participating in the race must purchase entrance to the tent (on race day) for a donation of $20 per person. They will be issued a wrist band which will be their entry ticket to the party.  These can be purchased on site at the event.

Timing and Results

Race bibs have an embedded timing chip.  Timing and place based on chip time is calculated by Finish Line Road Race Technicians (FLRRT) and posted at the finish line and after the race at FLRRT.com.  Top 6 overall winners will be announced in the tent.

Race Course Map

                                                           

The race course starts and finishes in the south section of North Hempstead Beach Park – formerly known as Bar Beach - then exists the park. Proceeds north on West Shore Road to a U-Turn (created by cones) south of the entrance to Beacon Hill Colony.

Continues south on West Shore Road to the vehicular turn just north of the entrance to Harbor Links

Continues north on West Shore Road then turn right into the parking field of the north section of Hempstead Beach Park.

Continues through the parking field to the beach promenade, then proceed to the finish on the promenade.

In Person Registration

We encourage all runners to register on-line. On line registration is open until Noon Thursday March 23rd. Fees remain the same throughout the on-line registration period. 

Same day race registration is available on March 25, 2023 from 7:30 AM - 8:15 AM at the North Hempstead Beach Park race venue. Fees for same day registration are higher ($75 for 21 and older; $50 for age 13-20). Shirts can not be guaranteed for same day registrants.

  • Is there race day registration?
    Yes, we will have race day registration but the fee will be higher.  We encourage all runners to sign up on-line only by Noon on Friday, March 24, 2023.
  • Can my friend or family member pick up my packet?
    Yes.
  • How are awards determined? Awards are based on GUN TIME. If you feel that you might be in contention for an award, make sure to line up near the starting line.
  • Where can I see race results?
    Race results will be posted on the side of the FLRRT truck.  Complete race results will be available at  www.FLRRT.com by noon on 3/25/23
  • When does online registration close?
    On-line registration closes on March 24, 2023 at Noon
  • When and where can we pick up our packets?
    Race Packet Pick Up is on Saturday, March 25, 2023 from 7:30 AM – 8:30AM at  the North Hempstead Beach Park Tent.
  • Is there a rain date?
    No. In the event of dangerous road conditions, the run will be cancelled, depending on police instructions.
  • After registering I realize I cannot participate Do you offer refunds?
    Unfortunately we do not offer refunds as funds are invested into the event well ahead of time.
  • Can I transfer allow someone else to use my bib? No, because the race results are calculated based on the runner’s gender and age.  If you mix up bibs, the race results are skewed.
  • Are there refreshments after the race?
    We are having a party in a heated tent after the race.  There will be  food, beer, water, soft drinks.
  • I am not interested in the beer party, is there a different price for party-free running?
    The price is the same for beer drinkers and teetotalers. 
  • Are there bathrooms available for the runners?
    We will have use of the restrooms at the Hempstead Harbor Beach Park and additional portable toilets if necessary.. 
  • Can I run with my dog? Dogs are not permitted for safety reasons.  
  • Are headphones permitted?
    Headphones are permitted.  Make sure, however, that you can hear all course and safety instructions from volunteers and police officers.
  • Is there a place to put my valuables when I am running?
    Runners typically lock their valuables in their parked cars.
  • Where do I park? There is plenty of parking at the parking fields of the Bar Beach/Hempstead Harbor Beach area.
  • When do the roads close to traffic? Two lanes of West Shore Road (Between Fairway Drive and Beacon Hill Road) will close at 8:15 AM.  If you are a Port Washington resident and need to speak with someone about the road closures, please call the Community Chest at (516) 767-2121
  • Who are the charities associated with the event?
    The Port Washington Winter Run benefits the Community Chest of Port Washington, a charity that raises money for 25 + local programs providing vital services for our Port Washington neighbors in need.

Traffic and Road Closures

The Community Chest is respectful of inconvenience to residents living along West Shore Road and in Beacon Hill.  For that reason, and to minimize any lane closure times, the Winter Run is open to participants with a running pace of 15:00, and a finish time not to exceed 75 minutes.  For residents travelling East/South from Beacon Hill, West Shore Road will be closed from 8:15 AM to 10:30 AM.  For cars traveling North on West Shore Road from Roslyn, West Shore Road will be closed just north of Fairway Drive.  Fairway Drive will be accessible from the south and exiting traffic must turn right.  Residents of Beacon Hill Colony will be able to exit the neighborhood heading north/west on Marginal Road.

 

Parking

All participants will be able to park in the Hempstead Harbor Beach Park parking lot where there is plenty of parking.  

Make sure to arrive by 8:15 AM as West Shore Road will close at 8:15 AM for the safety of all participants and residents.

The start/finish is in this lot as is the post-race party.
