Description
Come join us for the ALS Crusaders 5k!!!
As part of our Foroige Leadership Program service project, we are organizing a 5k charity run on Sunday, March 2nd, at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, NY. This 5k will benefit the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI). Through both personal experience and outward observation, we recognize the severe issues presented by ALS to patients and their families. In response, we are raising money for the world’s largest drug discovery lab focused completely on curing ALS. In order to do this, they need help to get there. We need your help in supporting this worthy cause! There will need to be not just one, but many treatments to end ALS. At the ALS TDI, they are not just advancing one treatment option – they are forging a path to deliver the multiple treatments that will end ALS for every person affected.
We, the ALS Crusaders, hope that you can join us on March 2nd! Come for the run and celebrate helping to make a difference in the search for a cure for ALS. 100% of the proceeds of this race will be going to the ALS Therapy Development Institute and all donations will go directly toward making an impact in the fight against ALS.

Our Community
This is Tom Butler.
Tom was working as a bartender during the COVID-19 pandemic in the winter when he first noticed numbness in his fingers when counting money. While he initially blamed the sensation on the cold, the numbness persisted everytime he was counting money. One year after these symptoms arose he went to an orthopedic surgeon to get an electromyography, a test that measures muscle response to nerve stimulation. The results of this test were inconclusive and he was told that he had a pinched nerve between his wrist and elbow. Not satisfied, Tom went for a second opinion. He was then referred to a neurologist, where he underwent a series of MRIs. He was eventually sent to a neuromuscular doctor at the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig ALS Center at Columbia University. There, 3 years after the onset of symptoms, Tom was found to have lower motor neuron degeneration, a telltale sign of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. As the disease progressed, Tom had to stop working as a bartender in August of 2024. Since then, the disease has taken an extreme physical toll on him by reducing motor function in his upper and lower extremities, making simple household tasks extremely difficult. However, Tom has remained extremely resilient throughout this entire process, maintaining a positive and humorous outlook on life. He attributes his ability to the unending support he has received from his wife, his two girls, and the community around him. People are constantly reaching out to Tom offering to help in any way that they can, whether it be installing a chair lift in his house, or providing emotional support. We are running this race for people like Tom. So that one day in the future, nobody has to have their entire world flipped on its head by this awful condition. Please support us so that we can make this future a reality.
