Description

Miles Madness is an elimination-style virtual running tournament. On September 7, every registered runner will be placed into a bracket based on their gender. Each week, participants will compete head-to-head against another competitor to see who can run that week's prescribed distance the fastest. The runner who submits the faster time will advance, while the runner with the slower time will be eliminated.

There will be six rounds with each round featuring a different race distance. Each round will last one week. During that week, runners are free to attempt the distance as many times as they want, on any course of their choosing (no treadmills!). Runners just need to make sure they submit a time as instructed before 4 PM EST on Sunday night.

Miles Madness Prize Money (REAL MONEY!)

25% of all registration dollars will fund the total prize pool. Of the total prize pool, 65% will be split by the female and male bracket winners and 35% will be split by the female and male runners up. *Please note: any amateur athlete who finishes in a "prize money position" will have their earnings donated directly to their school cross country/track program. Run fast for your school and help your team!

How Does Miles Madness Work?

The registration goal for this event is to fill a full 64-participant bracket for both male and female competitors. If that 64-person goal is achieved, the bracket will proceed just like a certain basketball tournament does in March: participants will be seeded, there will be weekly head-to-head competition with the runner who submits the faster time advancing, while the runner with the slower time will be eliminated. If we receive fewer than 64 registrants for a bracket, the first few rounds will operate "heat-style" with participants broken into multiple heats/groups where a certain number of top finishers per group are guaranteed to advance to the next round and a number of additional spots will be filled from the remaining runners in all heats combined based on the fastest times.

Registration for the tournament ends on Friday, September 4. All registrants at that time will be seeded, with the bracket/heat announcements made by the afternoon of Sunday, September 6.

Submitting Times

All submitted times must be supported by GPS data synced via Strava or Garmin. All runs must be recorded and emailed to CRCMilesMadness@gmail.com - you can either include a link to your activity, or a single screenshot that shows both total distance completed and elapsed time. Miles Madness staff reserves the right to ask for a link to your activity if it is not provided. Runners just need to make sure they submit a time as instructed weekly before 4 PM EST on Sunday night.

Routes

Participants are free to pick the route of their choosing. Routes run on tracks and downhill are both acceptable, but treadmill runs will not be accepted.

Schedule

The event will kick off the first full week of September and will conclude on October 18. The tournament schedule is as follows:

  • Round 1: 5 kilometers -- September 7-13
  • Round 2: 10 kilometers -- September 14-20
  • Round 3: 1 mile -- September 21-27
  • Round 4: 10 miles -- September 28 - October 4
  • Round 5 SEMI-FINAL: 5 miles -- October 5-11
  • Round 6 FINAL: 2 miles -- October 12-18

Rules Of The Road

Runners are expected to follow all traffic laws and obey appropriate social distancing requirements during their runs. Stopping your watch for a few seconds at a stoplight while waiting for traffic to clear is fine, but taking 5-10 minute breaks to catch your breath is frowned upon. You know what's right, you know what's wrong. Be smart and be fair. As noted elsewhere, Miles Madness staff reserves the right to request access to your activity file for review if it's not provided.

Once registered, please do not "unsubscribe" from event emails or you will miss reminders!
