The Chief's Champions 5k is an annual road race and 1 mile walk that takes place in Sunbury, Ohio. This year, we are excited to move to a new location at Sunbury Christian Church (in previous years, our race was held at General Rosecrans Elementary). In addition to a new location, this year's race will also have virtual race options (virtual 5K and virtual 1 mile) for those who cannot attend on race day but would still like to support our mission.
Our Story
In 2017, Jeff Wilson, Chief of BST&G Fire Department was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain tumor. The local community rallied together, and the first Chief's Champions 5k was held to raise money to support his fight against the disease. Sadly, Jeff lost his battle in June 2018, but the Chief's Champions 5k continues to be held in his memory, and with a new mission--to help find a cure. Funds raised will be given to OhioHealth Research Institute to support clinical trials that focus on brain tumors and treatment. All donations are also tax deductible.
Additional Race Information
Early Packet Pickup
If you've signed up for the in-person 5K or in-person 1 mile, you can save time in line on race morning by picking up your packet at early packet pickup! Early packet pickup for in-person participants will take place at Columbus Running Company's Westerville location (50 N State St, Westerville, OH 43081) on May 5 and May 6 from 10 am to 8 pm both days. In-person participants can also pick up their packets on the morning of the race, starting at 8 am. Virtual participants have the option to pick up their packets at early packet pickup (free of charge and same details as listed above) or can have their race packets mailed to their front door (additional $5.00 charge) by selecting the shipping option within the registration process. All packets for virtual participants who select shipping will be mailed out on Monday, May 9. Those who have signed up for either of the virtual race options (virtual 5K or virtual 1 mile) have the option to submit results here on the race website (by clicking the results tab at the top of the page) between May 7 and May 14, 2022.

Parking
Ample parking options will be available in the lot at Sunbury Christian Church (870 Admiral Dr, Sunbury, OH 43074). Please note that all vehicles must be at the church and parked in the church lots by 9:15 am. The entrance road to the church will be closed at 9:15 am so that we can line participants up for the start of the 5K. Please plan accordingly.
Awards
Awards will be given to the top 3 overall male and top 3 overall female finishers, as well as the top male and top female finishers in each of the following age categories: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and up.
Included In Your Registration
- 2022 Race T-Shirt - This year, we are offering a high quality, moisture wicking, performance race t-shirt! This dark green shirt (pictured below) is also made of UPF 50 fabric to protect against UV rays. Shirts are guaranteed for those who register by April 16. Shirts and shirt sizes are first come, first serve for those who register on April 17 or later.

Step 1: Sign up
Sign up for Chief's Champions here, and drop some extra in the bucket for the OhioHealth Foundation while you're there!
Step 2: Train
Train to get in shape for your race. Listen to your body and be smart. Looking for a group to connect with to keep you motivated throughout your training cycle? Check out the Rally Columbus group on Facebook, it's full of cheer and motivation to keep you rolling through race day.
Step 3: Participate
Get out during the event time frame (May 1-8) and participate in your race. Choose a safe course, socially distance properly as the current regulations dictate, and have some fun! Share your race photos to the results page when you submit your results.
Step 4: Report
After you've completed your race, you can report your results right from the website's results page. See our How To Report Results page on the site for details.
