Why We Run Against Racism:
Racism is an ever-present disease in our society. Though we have made great progress, overt racism or White supremacy has become increasingly public- and publicly supported- by people in our communities and even those in our highest offices. Hate speech, appalling stories, and horrific acts have become a regular part of our news and our social media feeds.
Covert racism is also becoming more recognized. From cultural appropriation to racist jokes; to fear of minorities; belief in racist, disproven theories; to victim blaming; displays of racist flags; discrimination; to excessive force and police brutality- we need to recognize the many ways that racism continues to permeate our society, even ones that many people find harmless or socially acceptable. In fact, most people who engage in these behaviors either deny the existence of covert racism, or they may not recognize their behavior as such.
The recent deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd, and subsequent protests appear to have brought us to a critical point. For so many people, it's clear that it's not just about George Floyd- or any other individual for that matter- but the racism that's been sewn into the fabric of our society. Systemic racism is real, and people are not only tired of hearing about individual acts, but sick and tired of the system that ignores, excuses, and fuels these acts, and protects those who perpetuate them. We need for this to change, but for this we need accountability.
The biggest supporter and perpetrator of racism? Silence.
If we want people to recognize racism- in all its forms, and for any meaningful change to occur, we cannot afford to be silent any longer. Silence is complicity, and is itself a form of racism. Every time we see a racist act and do nothing, or hear something racist said and say nothing, we offer our approval, while failing to support those affected. We ALL have a responsibility to stand up to racism- to socially distance ourselves from racist behavior, to flatten the curve and end this pandemic once and for all.
Will you join us?
We're joining together to Run Against Racism. And how can running a race fight racism? Well, running by itself may not. But participating and showing your support- and fighting silence, may go farther than you know! Running a race is a fun way to come together as a community- even when done virtually- to bring attention to these important issues at a critical time in our history. Join us in ending the silence as We Run Against Racism! Run, walk, or hike for 1 mile, a 5k (3.1 miles), 5 miles, or 10+ miles!
