About the Three Courses
There will be three days with four options each day!
Day 1 – Friday, April 25, 2025 - 10 AM; Day 2 – Saturday, April 26, 2025 - 7 AM; Day 3 – Sunday, April 27, 2025 - 7 AM
Option One: Little Pine State Park to DCNR HQ at Lower Pine Bottom | 17.7 miles, 4540 ft of elevation gain.
You will start at the Eastern States start line to AS 3 Lower Pine Bottom at mile 17.7. After leaving Little Pine State Park, runners will venture south on the Mid State Trail – PA’s Wildest Trail from the park to Ramsey, at the bottom of the Pine Creek Gorge and cross Pine Creek on a rails-to-trail bridge spanning the creek. Next, you will hike the Tiadaghton Trail back up to the top of the plateau and then eventually to the DCNR HQ. This 17.7 mile section is the quintessential sampling of the Eastern States course with steep climbs, technical downhill in dark and secluded hallows and stunning views.
Option Two: Tomb Flats to Cedar Run | 9.8 Miles, 1520 ft of elevation gain
This section begins at AS 10 Tomb Flats to AS 11 Cedar Run. 62.9 miles to 72.7 miles on the Eastern States 100 course. During the race, most participants run this section in the dark. But on SHEastern States Weekend, you can enjoy the section, and its vistas, in the daylight. After leaving Tomb Flats, it is a short mile jaunt down the Pine Creek Rail Trail to the tiny village of Slate Run. Cross the footbridge over Slate Run and immediately begin one of the Black Forest Trail’s famous climbs. You will pass through 3 rock quarries and 2 vistas before reaching the top where you will be back on single track. After a variety of trails atop the plateau, (Algerine Trail, Tumbling Run Trail and Vanaimes Trail) it is a rock descent into Leetonia Valley and the site of AS 11.
Option Three: Blackwell to Little Pine State Park | 23 Miles, 5004 ft of elevation gain
Begin at AS 12 Blackwell at mile 80.2 and finish at Little Pine State Park by treading almost entirely on the Mid-State Trail – that easy, right? Well… First, after leaving Blackwell, it is a long but fun climb to the top of Gillespie Point, known as the “Matterhorn of Pine Creek”. This is a panoramic vista of Blackwell and the huge bend in Pine Creek. It is miles of an incredible variety of terrain and natural beauty from single track, management forest roads, countless stream crossing and state-designated natural areas. The finale is a thrilling knife edge descent that is like a mile of Catskills trail was picked up and dropped into Pennsylvania. After crossing Little Pine Creek Road and onto the grass at the Little Pine State Park, I bet you can’t help but visualize yourself here in three months’ time.
Option Four: I will not be joining the group run and will do something on my own.
