THE BASICS
Triathlon
The main event at the Winter Challenge is an off-road triathlon consisting of a 7-Mile Trail Run, a 6-Mile Kayak, and a 10-Mile Mountain Bike.

Triathlon Relay
For those interested in teaming up, a Relay option is available, allowing you to compete as a 2 or 3 person team. And if you're having trouble finding a teammate, give us a shout and we'll do our best to pair you up with someone. Even better, give a shout out on our Facebook page, and you're sure to find some takers.

Duathlon
The Winter Challenge also features a Duathlon consisting of 7 miles of Trail Running and 10 miles of Mountain Biking. The Duathlon course is broken into three segments -- a 2.25 mile run, followed by an 10-mile bike, and finishing with a 4.75 mile run, all based on the same route as the full triathlon. The duathlon has grown considerably over the years, becoming a veritable all-out sprint from start to finish.

Duathlon Relay
Compete in the Duathlon Category as a 2-person team. Same format as the Duathlon.

FREQUENTLY GIVEN ANSWERS

Who is this Old Man of whom you always speak?
He is, well... our old man. His name's on the deed, and he loves the WC about as much as us. Be sure to say hi and introduce yourself.

I love me some Winter Challenge and want to see you guys continue making these good times roll for years to come. How can I ensure many more years of racing bliss?
You've got options, my friend. For a meager $250, you will officially join the ranks of Winter Challenge Sponsors. But if you just feel like it'd be cool to throw some bucks in the pot, you can do that too (here's the easy way).

Does everyone get a belt buckle for finishing?
hahahahahahahha... No. You've got to earn that baby.

I want to run part of the Winter Challenge, but my friends lack the ability to commit and follow through, and I therefore lack the substance required for a relay team.
It's cool, we all face challenges in life. And we're here to help with this one. Feel free to post your ISO (or missed connection) to our FB page or just send us a note. We'll do whatever it takes to ensure you've got companionship, relay-style.

Why do the folks at the Winter Challenge go to such lengths to make their participants happy?
As athletes ourselves, we understand the importance of a well-run race and a fun atmosphere.  It's not just about reaching that finish line, but about your whole day's experience.

How many years has the Winter Challenge taken place?
We got this bliss cooking in 2004.

Is this race only for seasoned triathletes?
Aw, hail no. The top finishers may be quite competitive, but many of the field will be racing their first off-road triathlon, or perhaps their first tri of any kind, for that matter. It's a great race for people who are looking for an introduction to the sport. If it still seems daunting, putting together a relay team is always an option.

What about the swim? It's February.
Swim? What swim? There is no swim. It's February. We kayak.

What's with the kayaking, then?
Many of our participants have little kayaking experience, so don't be put off. We do recommend getting in one and trying it out beforehand, though. It is a flatwater course so don't worry about rapids either! Although they are welcome, we don't recommend "whitewater" kayaks.

Okay, but where am I going to come up with a kayak?
Our very good friends from Nature Adventures Outfitters have got you covered.
Nature Adventures Outfitters: (843) 568-3222

Do people really race, having never been in a kayak?
We have had so many first time paddlers appear at the WC, we can't begin to tell you.  But even if you're a bit slower... it's a lake, so there's neither current or rapids! Only good times!

Can I paddle a canoe instead? And what about tandem kayaks?
We don't recommend it, but as long as you are paddling it alone, you're welcome to it. One person = one boat.

How about a paddleboard? Can I rock a paddleboard?
Negative, Ghost Rider. The pattern is full. Seriously, there are just too many submerged logs and stumps for this to be a good idea.

Can a team complete the course together?
Sorry, but no. Teams are relay only. Only one person per team may compete in each of the three disciplines.

What is the weather usually like?
Usually the race begins at a cool temperature... perhaps into the 30's. Still, it usually warms up into the 50's or 60's by the time you're back at the cabins chowing down. But it is February and anything can happen. And that is part of the excitement.

If the weather is inclement will a refund be available?
Only in the most extreme conditions will the race be postponed or cancelled at the discretion of the race management. Only then will a refund be available. Rain, Sleet, or Shine as the saying goes! Trust us on this one. Or feel free to ask around... but rest assured, we will race in pretty much any conditions (as long as it's safe).

After such a challenging race, will I be exhausted?
Yes, we have that on good authority. And as soon as you've regained your wits, you'll be probably immediately begin planning for next year's race.

What about volunteers? How can I sign up for some of that action?
Anyone interested in volunteering may contact thewinterchallenge@gmail.com, or better yet, head right over here to fill in the form and sign up for a specific need. Seriously, we always need help, so go ahead and be cool. There will be t-shirts, prizes, food and beverages for all volunteers. Matter of fact, these folks will likely be some of the best hooked up of the day.

Why do so many race directors consider the Winter Challenge one of the best races in the region?
There are several things that may contribute to this widely held belief. The challenge of racing three rugged disciplines in mid-winter is certainly a pleasant pursuit in and of itself. The landscape and setting make for a beautiful backdrop. It is a fine and wholesome family atmosphere, with a transition area perfect for race-watching and crowd support. And the trails are diverse and tremendously fun. But, perhaps, we are recognized most of all, because we strive so hard to make our participants happy.

Why do so many Winter Challenge Alumni keep coming back for more?
For the same reason that the race directors do!

What would you recommend for accommodations?
If you're determined to sleep in a cozy bed and watch some late night Cinemax, then you're probably going to pack it in from Orangeburg or Aiken, roughly 30-40 minutes away. Trust me when I say that camping is your best option, not only because of local hotel availability, but because camping has truly become a huge part of the Winter Challenge race weekend!

How do I know when I get there?
The entrance to Dome Farms can be found between Springfield & Williston, SC, just past the intersection of Hwy 39 & New Forest Road-- LOOK FOR THE DIRT DRIVEWAY at Go Irish Lane!!!! Come race weekend, you will find a large banner at the head of the road, so it should be pretty hard to miss.
