Transplant Strong!

We are blessed to have one of the strongest transplant programs in the nation at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) right here in Charleston. In fact, MUSC has the only living donor transplant center in the state. But, there are still over 1,000 people in South Carolina awaiting transplant surgery. That could be any of our neighbors, friends, or even family. 

In December 2020 Francisco Ramirez volunteered to be a Good Samaritan kidney donor. Through the MUSC Transplant Center, Francisco started a kidney transplant chain that would involve three recipients and three donors, giving the gift of life to three people – changing six lives forever!

The Transplant Strong 6k Virtual Challenge races were created by Francisco to remember and honor the acts of the three voluntary kidney donors and celebrate the new lives of the three recipients. This event highlights the need for living kidney donors and helps raise funds for the MUSC Transplant Center.  Part of the registration fee will be donated to support the programs at the MUSC Living Donor Institute. Additional donations to support the MUSC Living Donor Institute can be made through the race webpage.
