…..Our racing mission continues to be to produce affordable, hedonistically fun & athletically competitive races that also benefit some charity(-ies) with a populist & gender parity focus – for the average runner/walker (including the novices) and also for the seasoned, serious racer…..
Everyday there continue to be distressing stories from around the world, and even in our own backyard, of female marginalization and profound suffering. To wit: Women and girls as young as 10 are being atrociously abused and raped at will by grown men, sometimes by young boys encouraged by the grown men.11-year old girls are being forced to marry men as old as 80 years old. Many die giving birth. Atrocities galore! Women are ridiculed and denigrated for daring to seek the highest offices in the body politic or in some organized religious bodies. Women are asked to shut up – incredibly with the acquiescence of the highest Court in the land – when they seek parity in pay & treatment in the workplace. The list goes on and on……
And so in the last few years we’ve added to the mix of road races we organize some that benefit organizations which strive to empower women and girls here and abroad. Organizations which motivate, encourage and prepare females to achieve, unencumbered by sexist boundaries and taboos – to become scholars & scientists, professionals, clergypersons & priests, artists, athletes, servicepersons, business people and owners, skilled craft persons…what have you…to control their bodies and their reproductive rights… to pursue a life of adventure or of leisure of their own volition…to become anything they aspire to be, as God calls them and gives them strength & wisdom. Call this new focus a reawakened activist feminism & womanism. And so it goes……
In that vein then comes our sixth presentation of the Race Against Misogyny & Sexism (RAMS VI) 5K / 1 Mile Run/Walk on July 14th. Another statement race on the heels of the Peaceful Tomorrows with Our Troops & Vets 5K/1M in May….
Net proceeds will provide some funds to two of the organizations which address the consequences of this attitude – of pervasive misogyny & sexism -- and which strive to empower women and girls: Girls Inc. of Tarrant County – “inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold” AND SafeHaven of Tarrant County – “with a mission to end family violence through safety, support, prevention and social change”.
