Know Your Status AS ONE - help us reach our goal to have 53 people get tested for sickle cell trait so they'll know their sickle cell genotype.
If you've already been tested and know your genotype, please share it. HINT: if you do not have sickle cell or sickle cell trait then your genotype is HbAA or AA for short.
This race benefits the As One Foundation that was established to honor the memory of Devaughn Darling, who died of sickle cell trait exertion in 2001. All of our events and activities are planned to increase awareness of sickle cell and sickle cell trait. Your participation in this We Run AS ONE Virtual Race helps us continue doing just that.
Significance of "53"
53 was Devaughn's football number at FSU.
1953 was Ms. Wendy's birth year.
Devaughn is our founder, Devard Darling's identical twin brother that died of sickle cell trait exertion during football conditioning drills at Florida State University, February 26, 2001. We lost Devard 's and Devaughn's mother, affectionately known as Ms. Wendy earlier this year, January 26, 2020, also to a sudden and untimely death. Ms. Wendy's birth year was 1953. We miss them both dearly and now they serve as the inspiration for all As One Foundation events and activities.
