Description

Join us in Park City for the 2nd Annual Halloween-themed 10k fun run on October 28, 2017.  This is a free event and everyone is welcome to join.  It is not a race and there won’t be any bibs or timing chips.  There also won’t be any deferrals or refunds for cancellations, so don’t ask.  You will get candy and get to dress up and have fun with your fellow runners though!

COSTUMES ARE NOT ONLY ENCOURAGED, BUT REQUIRED!

Course

We will be running the Pinebrook Loop, starting and ending at Park City Running Company.  This is a 10k loop with 1,300ft of elevation with the first half being generally uphill, and the second half being all downhill.  The trail starts with a short ¼ mile section of road from the store to the trailhead and then climbs up some switchbacks.  Right around the 2 mile mark, you get a nice downhill break before hitting the road again for another ¼ mile section connecting you to the next trail.  Once you are back on the trail, you’ll go another mile and hit Emily’s Bench which will be the location of the trick-or-treat aid station which will be stocked with full size candy bars (because who doesn’t have fond memories of being lucky enough to get a full size candy bar while trick-or-treating) and water.  Once you’ve stocked up on sugar and water, you’ll head back down for a quick jaunt through the Pinebrook neighborhood, winding through the forest on trails like Jekyl and Hyde and Spring until you end up back at the trailhead where you started.  From here, a ¼ mile run back to the store is all that’s left and you’ll be done!

Course Surface:

Trail: ~85%
Road: ~15%

Course Marking:

The course will be marked with glowsticks to show you the way in case you are unfamiliar with the route.  We will use Orange glowsticks from the store up to Emily’s Bench (Trick or Treat Aid Station), and Green glowsticks from Emily’s Bench back to the store.  In other words, follow the orange glowsticks up to the top and the green glowsticks back down to the bottom.  If you get lost, turn around and go back to where you saw the last glowstick or stop and wait for someone else who knows the route to catch up to you.  Worst case, you will never be more than 1 mile from a neighborhood, so follow the lights and make your way back down the hill and call an Uber with your phone.

Course Elevation Profile

Aid Stations

Even though this is only a 10k run, in the spirit of the holiday, we will have a Trick-or-Treat Aid Station at Emily’s Bench (approximately 3.4 miles from the start) stocked with full size candy bars and water.  There won’t be any cups though, so bring your own hydration device or pick up a Park City Running Company soft flask before the run.  Otherwise you’ll have to wait until you are done to wash down the sugary delights.

Bathrooms

There is a single bathroom at Park City Running Company available for your use before and after the run.  There are no porta-potties and no bathrooms on course so plan accordingly.

Kids and Dogs

All ages are welcome to join as this is a fun run, but please read the course description and elevation profile and decide if your child is fit or capable enough to complete the course and do it in a reasonable amount of time.

Dogs are allowed on the Pinebrook trails, but please obey all leash and dog poop laws. There are no poop fairies out there so pick up after your dog and haul out their crap

Rules

Even though it’s a fun run, we still need some rules so here they are in no particular order:

1.     Costume required – If you don’t wear a costume, you may be subject to endless ridicule (or until you go home and can’t be made fun of anymore)

2.     Headlamp required – Sunset is at 6:29pm so it will get dark and there isn’t any lighting on the trail.  This is for your own safety.  Bring a proper headlamp and don’t try and use your iPhone to guide you.  If you forget one or don’t own one, Park City Running Company should have some to sell you or borrow one from a friend.

3.     Have a good attitude – This is a light hearted fun run and not a race being hosted out of the goodness of my heart.  Please have a good attitude, or don’t come.

4.     Have fun – How can you not have fun when Costumes, Candy, and Running are involved?
