COACH RYAN PURRINGTON
Purrington’s first year heading up both the cross country and track & field programs saw immediate success. The 2019-2020 season saw both men’s and women’s cross country programs record their best finishes at the ODAC Championships, where the team earned its first individual All-Conference honors and send two full teams to the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championship for the first time in school history and saw new school records for the women’s team every race of the season. During the Indoor season, the WildCats continued to set records, besting 9 previous school records for a total of 11 records during both seasons.
While Purrington has coached at Randolph, the WildCats have seen an astonishing 39 new school records, two individual ODAC Conference Champions, one ODAC Conference Championship record, and two NCAA Division-III National Championship appearances. A 2014 graduate of Randolph, he set several indoor and outdoor track records in the distance events including the mile (4:39.82), 3,000 meter run (9:14.34), 5,000 meter run (16:21.01), 1,500 meter run (4:12.95) and the 5,000 meter run (16:19.97). After graduation, Purrington continued to race on the track circuit, two years for the Oregon Athletics Club (2018-2019)and most recently raced to a lifetime best of 15:51.84 at the 2019 Portland Track Festival in Oregon and at the 2019 USATF Cross Country National Championships with the New Balance Pacers based out of Washington D.C.
For four years prior to coaching at Randolph, he taught world history at Altavista Combined School and served as the assistant cross country and track and field coach for 2 ½ years where he helped the cross country program build from 26 to 41 athletes out of a 733 student body and has coached five athletes to VHSL 1A All-State honors.
