The ULTRA

The Race Format
The Last Stand Backyard Ultra is not your typical race. It is a test of endurance, strategy, and sheer determination. Here's how it works:

Basic Format:
Course Length: , a loop of 3.4 miles
Time Limit per Loop: 40 minutes
Objective: Runners must start a new loop every 45 minutes. If you finish a loop early, you wait until the start of the next loop  to begin  again. If you fail to complete a loop within the 40 minutes, or if you are not at the starting line when the next loop begins, you're out.
The race continues until only one runner remains. That runner must complete one more loop than anyone else to be declared the winner. If no runner completes an additional loop, there is no winner.
Key Aspects:
No set distance: The race goes on until everyone else can't continue.
Mental Challenge: Competitors must manage fatigue, sleep deprivation, and the uncertainty of how long the race will last.
Strategy Matters: It's not always about speed but pacing yourself over potentially 24+ hours or even days.
The format was created by Gary "Lazarus Lake" Cantrell, the same race director known for the Barkley Marathons.

Starting Every 40 minutes:

Runners will begin their journey every 40 minutes, embarking on the 3.4 mile course.
The Challenge: You must complete the course within 40 minutes and be ready at the start line to begin the next circuit on time. This cycle continues as long as you meet the time requirement and are prepared to start again.
The Winner: The last runner standing—the last one who finishes a circuit within the allotted 45 minutes and is ready to start the next on time—will be declared the Winner.
