Description

Short Story:  We are raising money to install a toilet.  Our goal is to have 5,500 Virtual Runners Sign Up before the July 26 Anniversary of the The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Long Story is still pretty simple:  we are raising money to install an ADA compliant bathroom because everyone needs to have access to the toilet! The public facilities and physical spaces at 8065 Carlton Street, Norfolk, Virginia, constructed in 1955, are a community asset, open to all.  Our goal is equal access- particularly for those with mobility challenges.  Currently, there is a ramp to enter the building, but no automatic door opener ($2,500). The bathrooms are too narrow and the toilets too low so we want to install an ADA compliant bathroom ($14,000).  There are no handrails in the halls ($5,000).  The second floor meeting rooms are great, unless you have mobility challenges ($30,000 for an elevator).  This building is used as a polling station, it is used for AA meetings, it is used for craft gatherings, it houses a clothes closet, food is distributed as often as possible, and there is an elderly dance group that meets regularly.  However, community uses are limited because -- simply -- you have to go home to "GO." Our initial goal is 1,000 virtual entries to fully fund the door opener and bathroom installation so that all voters and community members can enter the building independently and use the facilities.  Our dream goal is 5,500 virtual entries so that we can include mobility and hearing assistance changes throughout the building.  In the interest of full disclosure, these upgrades are being made to the community spaces attached to Third Presbyterian Church.  The use of these facilities are available to the community and not restricted on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, age, sex, pregnancy status, political affiliation, veteran status, family medical and genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or disability.  In short, all are welcome at our table and in our house.  Please help make this a more inclusive and welcoming place.

So when do I get my medal?  We have ordered the first 1,000 medals from Ashworth Awards.  The first 1,000 runners to sign up will get their medals as soon as the Postal Service can bring them to you!  (We expect delivery May 28th and will being going to the post no later than June 4th.)  We will re-order in increments of 500 as needed until the race closes SEPTEMBER 02, 2019.  Medals take SIX weeks to manufacture.  So depending where you are in the cycle-- it could take between six to seven weeks.  While we know that sounds like a long time, we hope you understand these are SUPER COOL medals and this is a fundraiser.  If we had the money to order 5,500 medals up front, we'd just build the bathroom and install the elevator now!  If you register, you WILL get a medal.
