Description
Led by coach Dustin Sweeney, this is a summer running program built for high school students (or soon-to-be) preparing for upcoming Cross Country season! Based out of Loudoun County, Virginia - we will meet at various locations around the county and will seek out soft surfaces whenever possible.
We will meet on early (around 7:00 am) on Wednesday and Sunday mornings starting the Sunday after the last day of school, June 17th and run through the first day of the season, August 1st. Locations will jump around from Algonkian Park, Balls Bluff Battlefield, Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, The W&OD Trail, The C&O Canal Towpath and the backroads near Bluemont Va among other places. Sundays will serve as a long-run day and Wednesday will feature some up-tempo running. More advanced runners may do fartleks, tempos or some form of a moderate workout. Wednesday will be around 90-minutes long and Sundays will be 1:30-2:30, depending on the length of the run. Each day will feature various drills and strength training both before and after the run.
Dustin will lead the program assisted by current college runners and recent grads. The program will also feature various guest speakers of former and current running and coaching greats. Along the way, Dustin will use his 15+ years of coaching experience to teach each runner about training methodology, the techniques of cross-country running, form, drills, racing strategy, strength training, nutrition/hydration, injury prevention, proper shoes/spikes, and will explore the mental side of running among many other things!
Dustin spent six years coaching at Clarke County High School from 2002-2008, where his teams racked up 14 State titles in Cross Country and Track, including scoring 19 points at the state meet and becoming only the second school in Virginia State History to have Girls and Boys individual and team champions at the Cross Country State Championship. After coaching at Clarke, he went on to coach for James Madison University, The George Washington University and then for a professional team sponsored by New Balance.
This will be an opportunity to learn from Dustin's coaching experience in an uplifting, motivating atmosphere where you will run farther, faster and harder than you ever thought possible!
