Description

October is National Physical Therapy Month! To celebrate, physical therapists around the world often participate in a PT Day of Service to bring awareness to the profession, as well various populations that benefit from PT. In light of COVID, the need to volunteer and serve is greater than ever, but the options are drastically limited. As a result we have decided to organize a virtual 5k that can be done safely in your neighborhood/route of choice AND will raise money for a cause near and dear to the heart of PT. This race is an easy 5k that can be walked or run at any pace anytime in the week of 10/24-10/31, and all registration fees and donations will be donated to the National MS Society!

Personally as PT's we preach the power and benefit of movement, and who doesn't need some fresh air and exercise these days! We hope you will join us help others move better and we challenge each one of you to tag a friend and challenge them to do them same!

More info below on MS and the society, the benefits of physical therapy, and how you can get involved!

What is MS? Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disease where the body's immune response causes inflammation of the central nervous system, damaging the nerves and nerve coverings which results in a variety of neurological symptoms. There is currently no cure and the cause is thought to be due to a variety of genetic and environmental factors. The damage to the CNS can be progressive and there is a wide variety of symptoms including general fatigue, pain,  dizziness, numbness and tingling, muscle fatigue and weakness, muscle spasticity, difficulty walking, impaired vision, and bowel and bladder changes.

How is physical therapy used in the treatment of MS?

There are several medications approved to actually slow and treat the progression of the disease,  however PT is commonly prescribed to help decrease the effects of neurological symptoms and improve overall quality of life. Physical therapists (PT) evaluate and address your body’s ability to move and function, with particular emphasis on gait, mobility, strength, balance, and posture. From their assessment they will develop an exercise/treatment program focused on promoting independence and safety, and achieving and maintaining the highest level of functioning. In addition PT can help prevent complications such as de-conditioning, muscle weakness from lack of mobility, and muscle contractures related to spasticity. Physical therapy can also include pelvic floor exercises to address urinary/bladder issues.

How can I get involved?

First off by participating and or donating in this race! Tell all your friends and help us raise $ and awareness! The National MS society has donated over $974 million to research and also financial supports community and support groups to provide assistance to those affected and their families. Check out the society website below for more information and ways to get involved!
