Description

Time to chase the vert!

The Shenandoah Valley Runners (SVR) invites you to run up to (and past) the northernmost point in Virginia and the summit of Cacapon State Park in Wild and Wonderful, West Virginia.

Starting at 8:30am at the Nature Center in Cacapon State Park, participants will run 4.5 miles on a mostly-gravel road up to the overlook at the top of Cacapon Mountain. Participants who enter in the "one way" challenge will find a shuttle bus at the top that'll give them a ride back to the bottom. Participants who enter in the "two way" challenge will turn around and run the 4.5 miles down the mountain and back to the start (9 miles total).

Click here for a course map and elevation profile on Garmin Connect.

Event proceeds will be donated to Cacapon State Park.

Although we will be capturing finish results and giving out some prizes, this is a challenge, not a traditional race. The event coordinators are runners, looking to give other runners some cheap entertainment (and maybe raise some money for the park at the same time).

Will there be event shirts or other swag for registering? Maybe. No promises. However, we do promise cheap entertainment and an incredible view of the valley.

What are the prizes? Other than splitting results into male and female we do not currently plan on creating age groups though that may change if the turnout merits reconsideration of the results structure. Still, we will have a number of prizes to give away including: a box of Hot Tamale candy, a copy of the 2008 movie "Death Valley", and crown for the King/Queen of the mountain.

Is there a time limit? Yes, the race organizers meet family at Waffle House every Sunday at noon for smothered hash browns and a pecan waffle. Participants must be on the shuttle or back at the start/finish line before 11am to ensure the Waffle House tradition is not impacted.

Are there any aid-stations? This will be a cupless race (ie bring your own cup) but we will have water and sports-drink coolers at the bottom and top of the mountain, maybe also one in-between.

This is one of many events and races organized by the Shenandoah Valley Runners (SVR). SVR is a non-profit running club that was founded in 1977 and now boasts more nearly 1200 members. Not a member?
