Transition Area Setup & Tips
How to Set Up Your Transition Area
The transition area is the “hub” of the race and can feel busy and overwhelming, especially for first-timers. Keep your setup simple and practice it before race day if possible!
Before You Start
- Know exactly what you’ll use in T1 (Swim → Bike) and T2 (Bike → Run)
- Arrange items in the order you’ll use them
- Keep your setup compact and organized
Rack Your Bike
- Find your race number or designated spot in transition
- Rack your bike by placing the front of the seat over the rack
- Check:
- Tire pressure
- Brake pads for rubbing
- Bike is in an easy gear (small chain ring recommended)

Recommended items:
- Swim goggles & swim cap
- Helmet
- Bike shoes
- Running shoes/socks
- Race bib/race belt
- Nutrition & hydration (for longer races)
Transition Setup Tips
- Put your timing chip around your ankle with the chip to the outside and exposed
- Place water bottles on your bike
- Loosen shoe straps/laces for quick changes
- Place helmet upside down with straps open
- Put sunglasses inside helmet, ready to grab
- Set visor/hat near running shoes
- Place race belt next to running shoes or pin bib to your shirt
- Keep extra items (gels, sunscreen, inhaler, etc.) toward the back of your towel
Most Important Tip
Keep it simple, organized, and easy to access so you can move smoothly through transition!
