A Vision For A New School in South Africa

The Inaugural Run for a Cause 5k race hosted by Fayette County Public Schools is excited to announce that this year’s cause will be to fund a school in South Africa.

The inspiration behind this year’s cause is Phakamani Bearden. Here is a bit of his story:

Hi, my name is Phakamani Bearden, and I originate from Soweto, South Africa. If you don't know anything about the history of South Africa, there's a very rich history and wonderful people, but there is also a very painful history due to apartheid. Apartheid ended in 1994 before I was born, but not too long before, and the remnants of its effects remain. These townships lacked resources, supplies, and the infrastructure that were needed. This lack of resources and lack of an effective education system made it very difficult for me to learn. It was very challenging, but everything changed because in 2010 when a school called The Ron Clark Academy came to visit South Africa to visit the school that I attended. We went through all the paperwork, jumped through all the hoops, and at the age of 12 years old, my brother, my friend, and I got on a plane with a gentleman from South Africa and were transported to the United States to become students at the Ron Clark Academy. Ron Clark Academy is a school that's highly academically challenging. Imagine going from being in a school with no resources to going to this beautiful school full of some of the best teachers in the world. As a student at the Ron Clark Academy, I was living with the co-founder of the school, and very quickly, we became a part of their household. I spent many late nights with Kim Bearden working to catch up on the content I missed. At that point, we realized something incredible could happen because the Bearden’s, who are now my parents, became more than our host family; they adopted us and became our parents. One of my biggest dreams is to go back to South Africa to build schools and provide resources for teachers and students. My time in South Africa showed me what it is to be in a school without resources, without access. My coming to America and being surrounded by the love of my mom and dad and being embraced here in the United States, I believe I'm exactly where I am supposed to be, supporting educators. My life was changed by an educator, and I would like to do the same for others.

Come on and out help us support this cause!
