This year, the Louisville Zoo’s wildest 5K in town — Throo the Zoo presented by Norton Audubon Hospital — will be run virtually only. The Zoo has cancelled this year’s in-person portion in an abundance of caution and following the recommendations of Kentucky Governor Beshear to postpone events in response to Kentucky’s red state status from increased cases of COVID-19. The onsite race had been scheduled for November 21, 2021 and was rescheduled from its usual date in May also due to COVID-19 measures.
The virtual race allows participants an opportunity to complete the 5K distance at their own pace on a date, time and course of their choosing before November 30, 2020.
Throo the Zoo is one of the Zoo’s largest fundraisers. The virtual race proceeds benefit the Louisville Zoo, which is dedicated to its mission of bettering the bond between people and our planet.
Virtual registration for this important Zoo fundraiser is $30 and includes a sloth-themed medal and a ticket to return to the Louisville Zoo during regular hours. Participants can add a cotton sloth-themed shirt for $7 and a tech shirt for $12. You will then have through the end of the month to complete your virtual event and submit your results.
In lieu of the event, we will be doing a drive-thru packet pick-up in the parking lot of the Louisville Zoo on Thursday, Dec. 3 from 3p-6p; Friday, Dec. 4 from 12p-6p; and Saturday, Dec. 5 from 8a-2p. You will be able to pick up all your swag on site at that time. Items included with your registration include an admission ticket for a future visit to the Louisville Zoo during regular hours, commemorative medal, and more.
All participants in the virtual 5K will get a sloth-themed medal!
Even though we can't be together in person in 2020, take a selfie of yourself running or after you complete your Throo the Zoo virtual 5K (costumes earn extra points). When you post, make sure they are public and include the hashtag #ThrooTheZoo.
If you signed up before the race moved entirely virtual, you will receive one of the cotton participant T-shirts. You also had the opportunity in the registration process to update to a tech shirt. If you signed up for the virtual race, you had the opportunity to purchase either version of the event T-shirt.
