Basket of Hope Louisiana
Ann Ollendike, a Louisiana native, devoted her life to caring for and teaching sick and disabled children and their families through her 32-year career as a pediatric speech-language pathologist. Amidst her career, she too experienced the uncertainty and hopelessness in life when the unexpected happened...her daughter, Juliana was born with serious illness and severe disabilities.
Overcoming the odds, and moving beyond the isolation, mounting medical bills, inability to work, and long periods of time as a single mom, she found her true strength and security in raising her daughter through her growing Christian faith.
The challenges through which she lived produced a mission of HOPE planted through prayer during an extended medical stay in a local children’s hospital. In 2008, a HOPE-filled dream to nourish seriously ill hospitalized children and their families was born which brought about Basket of Hope Louisiana.
Every day the unexpected happens when children are diagnosed or faced with a sudden tragic event. At the time of diagnosis, the children and their families feel overwhelmed with the news. It is important for them to be reminded that God loves them and is neither punishing nor abandoning them. He will be there with them through this frightening time. It is also important for them to know that the community cares for them, which is why we need your help!

This event benefits Basket of Hope Louisiana.
Basket of Hope (Louisiana chapter), a local 501(C)3 nonprofit, has been serving the community for over 10 years in Children's Hospitals across New Orleans, the Northshore and Baton Rouge. Pediatric patients are personally visited and gifted a generously packed basket filled with age appropriate toys, games, books, crafts and more. Items are included for siblings too (they spend a lot of time at the hospital). Parents are included in the visit as well and as an option are offered a "Hope Tote" filled with items to nourish them mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Local celebrities often join the Basket of Hope volunteers in delivering the baskets and encouraging the families. We know that the IMPACT of our visit lifts the parent’s spirit and offers them strength to continue caring for their sick child. Additionally, seeing the joy in the patient’s faces when presented with a basket of hope is encouraging to all who witness it. When children engage in play, we know it promotes healing.
