Description
Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional death worldwide
The Centers for Disease Control report that here in the United States, on average, 3536 people died from drowning annually, which equates to 10 deaths each day!
According to the CDC, drowning is the number one cause of unintentional death for children between 1 an 4.
76 percent of the drowning deaths in the United States each year involved children younger than 5 years old.
67 percent of swimming pool drowning deaths involved children younger than 3 years old.
75 percent of drowning deaths of children younger than 15 occurred at a swimming pool located at a private residence (home pool, neighbor's pool).
These statistics should alarm you, not only the number of fatalities but also that deaths due to drowning are preventable given proper instruction and training. The mission of ISR is to do just that by training children and infants from 6 months to 6 years in aquatic safety. The mission of the LIfesaver 5K is to raise awareness of aquatic safety and to provide scholarship opportunities ISR to families in need. The Lifesaver 5K will also support local high school swimming by donating a portion of the proceeds to the Southwood High School Swim Team.
