Event FAQS
Q: Has the location changed?
A: Yes! For 2026, the Light the Way 5K Walk/Run is moving to Downtown Charleston. The race will begin and end at City Center at Slack Plaza, placing participants right in the heart of Charleston's holiday festivities. We're excited to bring this year's event to a more central location featuring beautiful seasonal lights and a festive downtown atmosphere.
Q: Where can I park?
A: There are several convenient parking options near the race venue, and most are available at no cost on Saturday evening. We recommend the Summers Street Garage, nearby street meters (free on Saturdays in December), and other public parking garages throughout downtown Charleston. Please allow extra time for parking and walking to the start area, especially as downtown holiday events may increase traffic.
Q: Where are the restrooms?
A: Restrooms will be available at City Center at Slack Plaza. Additional restroom access may be available at nearby restaurants, businesses, and public facilities in the downtown area. Event volunteers will be happy to direct participants to the nearest restroom locations on race day.
Q: What else is going on at the event?
A: The Light the Way 5K is much more than a race. It's a holiday celebration for the whole family!
- Santa Claus will be making a special appearance and will be available for photos with participants.
- A professional photographer will be offering free photos for participants in front of Charleston's beautiful Christmas tree.
- Participants can create and personalize luminaries for a small fee. These luminaries will line the finish area and help "light the way" for walkers and runners.
- Enjoy hot chocolate, holiday music, and festive cheer throughout the evening.
- Don't forget to participate in the event's fun contests, including Best Costume, Ugly Sweater, and Most Creative Team Theme.
Q: What time should I arrive?
A: Race day check-in and registration begin at 4:30 p.m., and the 5K Run and Walk start at 6:00 p.m. We recommend arriving at least 30-45 minutes before the start of the event to allow time for parking, check-in, and enjoying the pre-race festivities.
Q: Is the event timed?
A: The 5K Run is timed, while the 5K Walk is untimed, allowing participants to enjoy the experience at their own pace. Whether you're racing for a personal best or strolling through downtown with friends and family, there's a place for everyone at Light the Way.
Q: What will I receive with registration?
A: Registered participants will receive a commemorative race shirt (if registered by the shirt deadline) and a race light to help illuminate the course and create a memorable holiday experience.
Q: Will the event take place if it is cold or raining?
A: The Light the Way 5K is a winter event, so participants should dress appropriately for the weather. Any updates regarding severe weather or event changes will be communicated through the race website and social media channels prior to race day.
Q: Are there awards?
A: Yes! Medals designed by Children's Therapy Clinic's clients will be given for:
