Inspired by the international swimrun race series ÖTILLÖ (island to island), originating in Sweden in 2006, and following on the success of the introduction of swimrun to North America over the last two years with SwimRun Casco Bay Islands, SwimRun USA is pleased to partner with ethos to bring you the 2nd ONLY "ÖTILLÖ-style" swimrun event in the entire US, consisting of multiple, alternating swim and overland running legs (island roads, trails, and shoreline scrambles) in the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. Situated in America's greatest sporting city, this epic swimrun adventure will be an open water swimmer's paradise.
Only miles away from bustling downtown Boston, the Boston Harbor Islands feel as though they are a world away from a major metro city. A ferry ride departing from the Boston waterfront will take athletes to the start line in the southernmost chain of the Harbor Islands. You will be challenged every stroke of the way with five formidable swim crossings totaling 3.2miles. Your team will tackle potentially chilly and choppy water and changing tides as you weave north and west through the islands to the finish on Spectacle Island where an incredible finish party will be held. In between the swims, you'll be amazed at the unique personalities of each of the islands as you run approximately 13 combined miles on five of the islands within this national recreational treasure.
Remaining true to the origins of the sport, SwimRun Boston Harbor Islands is a two-person team event conducted over an islands chain. Not a relay, teammates must race the entire course together. Rules permit swim aids such as hand paddles, pull buoys, wetsuits and even swim fins to name a few. Certain safety gear is mandated by race rules and hydration and race fuel can be carried too, but what one starts with, so too must they finish with. Changing from trail shoes to swim fins, or tending to awkward gear can chew up valuable time. Having the right teammate and equipment can make all the difference.
A WORD OF ADVICE - Being honest about your open water swimming skills will be the key to your joy or disappointment on race day. Please carefully consider if this event is for you, swimrun can be an ARDUOUS ADVENTURE DUE TO VARIABLE CONDITIONS. You NEED TO BE A COMPETENT AND CONFIDENT OPEN WATER SWIMMER. Neoprene wetsuits (swimskin suits are not allowed) covering the full torso and upper thighs at a minimum are MANDATORY, NO EXCEPTIONS.
Hopefuls are encouraged to view the video of our partners SwimRun Casco Bay Islands 2017 event to learn more about this challenging adventure and gain insight on optimal gear selection. SwimRun Boston is produced by SwimRun USA LLC and ethos.
