Virtual Dreaded Druid Hills 10K Summer Solstice

Mon June 1 - Tue June 30 Baltimore, MD 21217 US Directions

Place

Druid Hill Park
or the Anywhere option
Baltimore, MD US 21217

Description

This has traditionally been Baltimore's toughest race.  For the first time we are conducting a virtual race in the interest of runner safety during the 2020 pandemic.  We are new to the virtual race space, and would appreciate your feedback at the conclusion of this event.  We will have a series of low-cost virtual races and training programs leading up to the Celtic Solstice in December to get some experience in the virtual race field.

The customized Race shirt is ordered separately through the race store for $25.  You will go through the store during registration or come back to the main menu and it is on the lower left hand side of the screen.

Free pair of Brooks or Asics Running Shoes as a random prize!  -  At the conclusion of the race, a random drawing will be held.  A pair of Brooks running shoes and a pair of Asics running shoes will be given away to two lucky winners (If the winners cannot do a curbside pickup at Falls Road Running Store then they will need to pay for shipping)

The Historical Summer Solstice Dreaded Druid Hills Course

The course would start out on the flat to gently rolling roads in the main part of Druid Hill Park for the first mile and a half of the event, then would enter the back hills for a series of steep climbs and descents with multiple false tops and sharp turns.  Runners would then emerge into a final mile of flat pavement under a blazing hot sun to finish at the Moorish Tower overlooking downtown Baltimore.

So for your Anywhere virtual course design, try to find with about a mile and a half of easy running, followed by eight hill climbs and eight descents of 100 to 150 feet in three and a half miles.  If you live in a flat area, substitute highway overpasses, outdoor stadium stairs, or parking garages for your hills. Your finish line should should be somewhere with a great view representative of where you are.

If you want to run the Old Summer Solstice course in Druid Hill Park, then use this map.

Post a selfie with either the tower or the city as your background to #dreadeddruidhills.

Charitable Component - Top Ten Donors will receive a complimentary entry to the Celtic Solstice Virtual Five-Miler
The race is also collecting donations for 3 worthy causes that have been supported by the Celtic Solstice in the past.

A) JHU Huntington's Disease Clinic, recommended by Boordy Vineyards, providers of Celtic Solstice wassail wine.
B) Moveable Feast, recommended by Chef Tim Mullen, Celtic Solstice Soup maestro.
C) Turnaround Inc., recommended by Sue Kallaugher, a Celtic Solstice volunteer coordinator

There is a fourth 501(c)(3), the Celtic Star.  The Celtic Star is a distribution mechanism that dispenses the donations among the named charities.   The donation board does not allow you to split your contribution.  We can split contributions through the Celtic Star.  That is also the organization that will send you a tax receipt for your records should you itemize your income tax deductions.

The event will be donating  $1 of your $10 entry fee to the Celtic Star EIN 45-1758574.  The event is also absorbing those pesky processing fees and administrative fees.  There will also be a separate donation page, so give a couple dollars to a charity of your choice.  If you donate, you can only donate to one charity.  If you want your donation spread among the three major charities, then donate to the Celtic Star which will distribute your donation to among the three.  You will receive a separate email confirmation of your donation for your tax records.  You will also receive a copy of this text below your race fee summary in your email receipt.  Keep it for your tax records if you itemize your deductions.
