Description

Join us for the 17t Annual Great Chesapeake Bay Wellness Race - Now an all-Virtual, Thanksgiving Week event, organized by Eastern Shore Hospital Center

"Be Thankful for Your Mental Health!"
 Saturday,  November 21 - Friday, November 27, 2020

For the last seventeen years, approximately 300 community members have joined our patients and staff on the second Saturday in May to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. The National Mental Health Association seeks to create awareness about this illness and the possibly disabling consequences of this disease. A way to participate locally and promote good physical and mental health is with the Eastern Shore Hospital Center Auxiliary event.

This year the Eastern Shore Hospital Center celebrates over 100 years of community-linked, recovery-focused care for mental illness. All proceeds directly benefit our patients, residents and special programs. This year, the CoVid-19 Pandemic has made our race go virtual, and just in time for the Thanksgiving Holiday!  A virtual race allows you to participate anywhere - and join with your family and friends.

Our 17th annual Wellness Race and Family Walk will be held starting on Saturday November 21 - Friday November 27. Join together with your friends and family, near and far, during the week of Thanksgiving to run or walk and be thankful for your mental health, while you are helping those who are not so fortunate.
Participation fees for the race for adults are $30 pre-registration for the 10K run, 5K 100th Anniversary Run/Walk and 3K Family Walk. There is no fee for youth under 12. The fee includes a commemorative tee shirt and race bib, and a chance to win prizes.

The ESHC Auxiliary is a totally volunteer, 501 (c) 3 organization whose sole purpose is to provide patient services at the hospital.  The Auxiliary sponsors many special activities throughout the year. Approximately 69% of ESHC patients are deemed indigent and it is the Auxiliary’s goal to raise $10,000.00 a year in order to give those patients approximately $1.00 per day to use in the center’s café or gift shop.  100% of the proceeds from the Run/Walk will be given directly to our patients and patient programs.
The Eastern Shore Hospital Center us a regional acute-care psychiatric facility, under the jurisdiction of the Maryland Department of Health. The ESHC Auxiliary was chartered in 1952.  As a not for profit organization, our Auxiliary has a parallel mission with the Eastern Shore Hospital Center.  This mission is to provide the highest quality recovery-based continuum adult inpatient and transitional mental health services for eighty patients on the Eastern Shore.  We serve citizens of the counties of Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Caroline, Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset and Worcester.
The hospital is geographically located in Dorchester County.  However, our primary service area for in hospital patients is the lower shore counties of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
To register, volunteer, become a sponsor, please contact the ESHC Auxiliary at 410-221-2358 or email: Judith.slaughter@maryland.gov

What is a Virtual Race?

During this time of CoVid-19 restrictions, we are not allowed to gather in groups and hold large, in-person events.  So instead of an In-Person race, we are offering a virtual run to support the cause of the Eastern Shore Hospital Center and have fun with racing in a location of our own choosing

A virtual run means you choose your course and time to run or walk - your place, your pace! Between November 21-27 we will be accepting results. You may register for the 10K, 5K or 3K Mile distance.  You can start any time and use the RaceJoy app to track and submit, or use your phone, fitness tracker, or treadmill readout to show us your distance and time.

TRACKING AND SUBMITTING YOUR VIRTUAL RESULTS

Using RaceJoy to track your race and submit your results:

We’ve made it easy to upload your results to the Virtual Event, using RaceJoy.  You’ll need to download the RaceJoy app: https://www.racejoy.net/download (or choose your favorite App provider)  It’s available for your Android or iPhone.

When you’ve downloaded the app, set up your profile (Name, City, Email Address, DOB) so that RunSignUp can let RaceJoy know that you’ve registered for a race with RaceJoy Tracking. You can also set up a Tracking Number (optional) so that your friends and family can send you messages of support while you are completing your virtual race.

Once you have confirmed your race and distance on RaceJoy, that’s all you need to do until you are ready to race!

RACEJOY will go live approximately 1 week before Race Day. All those registered will receive an email with further information at that time.

ON RACE DAY:

The results are open starting on 11/21 through 11/27 so you can run your virtual race and submit your time! Open the app and confirm your race.  Click START TRACKING to let the app know!  You will see a message that tells you to turn off your WiFi on your phone; the app runs solely on cell phone connection.  If you keep the WiFi on it will skew the tracking.

That’s it!  As you complete each mile, RaceJoy will give you an audio status update.  When you have completed your distance the app will let you know your completion time and automatically send your results to RunSignUp for inclusion in the race results.  If for some reason your results do not upload automatically, you will see instructions for uploading them manually.  You can also send a screenshot of your results to andrea@bluecheetahtiming.com

Don't worry, we will be sending out instructions via email shortly before race day!
